First elk hunt with my recurve

well...I am getting ready to leave on Tues for my first elk hunt with my recurve and I am starting to get butterflies.  I have been tryting to kill an elk for the last 8 years with a bow (compound) and have yet to seal the deal.  Defintitely frustrated that I haven't been able to get one but really feel like I can get it done if I can get within 15 yards.  I feel pretty good but am still a bit fuzzy on when i should draw since the only thing I can relate to is with a compound where you can hold at full draw.  Anyone offer any advice or last minute pieces of advice?  I figure maybe going with my recurve will help break the curse.

Ive been several times ,some sucessful,some not..but had a great time on all. if u are doin th callin its sometimes hard to draw just because he has u pinpointed..Best if someone else is calling tryin to drag elk over your position...sometimes a smooth draw on an elk passin u at close range will trigger him to stop and look ur way,,givin u a shot..hope some of this helps!! I try to draw when I cant see there eye. I also get focused on the spot the arrow is going and when it all feels right it just happens.

Thats right ,blueline, I always remember pickin a spot ,concentrating, but never the release..good point man

You will have a great advantage. You can draw, point and shoot a recurve in about 2 seconds. Your wheelie had to be drawn in advance and there were a ton of things to hook up, line up and hold steady. Shoot with confidence!

I ditched my wheelie bow this season and took a nice 5x5 with my recurve. It was my first trad animal so you can do it also. Go get em'!

But, if you simply want confidence that you are making a sound choice and using equipment that can REALLY do the job, see FerretWYO's thread on the Gang about what he and his partners have recently accomplished with trad gear....

While I agree that modern equipment can be better for longer-range shots than I choose and shooting groups, I feel like I have a superior HUNTING weapon in my hands with my recurve.

KelleyBender, here is the link to my elk hunt story. Like FerretWYO said, success is measured by the experience. I went with that in mind and is the exact reason I chose to hunt with my recurve. The fact I was fortunate enough to take a beautiful elk with my curve was the icing on the cake!

Hey Greg, I was basically in the same boat as you back in 2006, plenty of elk hunts and not much to show for it. I even wrote an article for our state bohunters organization publication titled "The Curse" telling the story of me shooting my 1st bull with my recurve. If killing an elk is your only goal, you set yourself up for disappointment. If your goal is to immerse yourself in the experience of a wilderness hunt, you will return home blessed regardless of whether you fill your tag or not.
