I'm not a big fan of vanes, I prefer feathers but I used to always carry 1 arrow w/vanes for rainy days when I was shooting wheel bows while deer hunting.
If anyone has used them, what worked the best on traditional bows?
I would assume a soft plastic vane would be best if any work at all.
Thanks

Coop

This year I am using a Bear stick on rest and vanes. I am just using regular 4" vanes. I am getting very good flight, but I don't know if I would try vanes off the shelf.

If you are using an elevated rest, vanes shouldn't be a problem. If you shoot vanes off the shelf, you are asking for arrow flight problems.

Ya I shoot off the shelf and I was thinking it wouldn't work very well.
I'll have to be extra careful during rain.

I have had good luck shooting vanes off the shelf.

Most "production" arrows are now fletched to be nocked cock vane down, for use with a forked "wheely bow" rest. I flip them over and shoot them cock vane up. I mount my 2 blade broadheads horizontal, and my nock point is set at 5/8th inch above shelf hieght. (I still prefer feathers though)
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

dc51 in  a rain I'll remove the one goose feathered arrow I carry and cover the rest with a plastic bag.
I don't care for the rasied rest and thats the only way I was able to get proper flight with vanes
