How can it be that fast????

I have a new Dwyer long bow.  It is 66 inches long, elm with boo cores and an osage riser.  I have a fast flight string and shoot a 30.5 inch arrow ( 617 grains  )at 50 or 51 pounds.  It is super quiet and really spits an arrow.  I shot it on a chronograph hoping to get around 160 fps.  Turns out is shoots 180 fps.  I doubted this greatly, but my friend had his wheely bow and it shot 265 fps just like any other chrono he had used in the past.  Still, this seems rediculoulsly fast to me.

Any thoughts from the trad gang?

Bob,
You said how long the arrow was, but didn't mention your draw length. Id you have a corresponding long draw, say 29.5", then that # is definitely in the ballpark, given the longer power stroke.

Shooting a 740gr arrow 27" draw 29" arrow:
ACS         45# 151 fps
Toelke Whip 48# 143 fps
Bear T/D    44# 136 fps
Have some heavier ACS limbs coming in 3-4# heavier then the 45#'s. Wonder what the difference will be. I also have some heavier limbs for Bear (53# @ 27") but have not chrono.

I think the 160fps you expected was a little on the low side with your longer draw, lighter arrow and heavier bow.

Yep, bout right....
I had a 66" 21st Century @ 62# with my 32" draw it shot a 700 grain arrow @ 207.
The long power stroke adds up!

My draw is 30.5 inches.  I appreciate the posting.  I just never figured a long bow at such light poundage could be that fast with a heavy arrow.  Besides, it is quieter than a wisper.  It is really a fun bow to shoot, just velvet smooth.

Zilla,

I shot six arrows.  4 were 180 fps, one was 181 and one was 183.  So I just said, ok, 180 ...  excellent!  I figured longer limbs had more ground to recover, thus were slower a tad.  Now I think my longer draw gives the bow a bigger power curve and more momentum in the limbs to push the arrow with.  Anyway, I like the way it shoots and it so silent.  I appreciate all the postings. I hope to fill a tag with it this year.
