Power hone wheels

Have any of you blokes experimented with power honing the burr off broadhead blades.

I was thinking of building up a leather disc to run on my grinder set up.

Any observations based on experience would be welcome.

I have a powered sharpening stone by Tormek that has a circular stone that rotates through a water trough for wet grinding, and a leather wheel on the other side of the machine. It's great for broadheads and knives, and the leather wheel gets them perfect.

I'll second the Tormek....Jet also offers a similar, slighly less expensive unit.  Both machines put on an excellent edge to single bevel broadheads.

If I laminated leather together to make my own hone, what sort of glue would be best.

A good rubber contact cement like Barge should do well for gluing the leather, but you can save yourself the cost and effort with a simple buffing wheel and jewelers rouge.  Most any wheel should do, but I like the harder ones best.  I and some friends have used this for several years to "strop" our broadheads and it really works great.

Two issues to watch for:  Keep your wheel speed and pressure low, as it is easy to get the edge very hot; and ALWAYS have the wheel turning AWAY from the edge.

I have a stitched denim wheel and a brown dressing compound, but it seems to be a little slow.

I also intend doind a lot of broadheads and was thinking the leather wheel might be more durable.

My grinder set up has a variable speed and spins away from me. Any thoughts on revs per min?

I was  thinking of making  the leather honing disc about 8" diametre by 1" wide

You might check into the paper wheels. I don't know the brand name but the guys who sharpen knives at the gun shows here usually have them for sale.

Are the paper wheels fairly durable, I have a lot of broadheads to do?
