Does a recurve have to be cased and un-strung while heading to your stand?

Gary Logsdon

I haven't hunted NW Ontario since they closed the spring bear season, but I did spend 14 seasons there before that (the bear I'm posing with is an Ontario bear).  I think we had to either unstring and/or place the bow in a case of some kind when we left the hunting setup each evening . . . IOW during illegal shooting hours.

A bow is treated the same as a rifle or s/gun.It must be encased till 1/2 hour before sunrise--and must be encased 1/2 hour after sunset.  But it does NOT have to be unstrung.

All bows must be carried in a bow case...compound or recurve. I purchased a Soft case for my recurve so I didn't have to keep stringing and unstringing my bow. Get the case for a strung recurve or longbow...life will be easier...

That's an interesting rule. What constitutes a case?

My case for my recurve is simply a camo bag with a draw string that easily folds up in my pack. I have checked this with local game wardens and they say it is fine.

A few years ago while deer hunting in Loring Ontario my pal forgot his case and used a blanket to wrap his bow in, he was checked by a warden who smiled at the blanket but said that it was fine.

Never heard of such a thing.

You do NOT have to have your bow cased while heading to or from your stand so long as it is 1/2 after sunrise or 1/2 hour before sunset. Seeing as most bear hunting is done in the afternoon, u will be fine walking in uncased, but when done at the end of the night u will have to have in in a case. And PLEASE do not forget u need to wear blaze orange while u are heading to or from your bait sight while hunting. You do not need to wear it while in the stands, only while moving to or from the bait sight. Bill
