Refinishing

I picked up a used Toelke SSLR.  Great bow.  I didn't like the strike plate material on it when I got it so I took it off.  When I did, this happened.  I actually found the bow still listed on another site and the previous owner said he had refinished it (I think with spar urethane.  Can't remember exactly.)

I don't know the wait time to have it refinished properly by Toelke but I'm going to be contacting them.  Is there anyone else?  I don't want this to happen again.  Thanks.

Can't tell from the pic exactly what happened, but it looks like the sticky backing on the side plate material just remained stuck to the bow.  Should be easy to peel off.

It's hard to see what happened from the picture. Toelke bows are all finished with Thunderbird. If someone used super glue to install the strike plate you have a problem with either thunderbird or a spar urethane finish. If it is simply residue stuck on either finish, a cotton ball and acetone should remove it. Dan's # is 406 253 4949.

That's a hole in the finish.  The finish came off with the velcro.  It was just stick on velcro from what I could tell.

i would just start flaking that junk finish off with a knife and then sand it and put a couple coats of poly on it, take you maybe 2 hrs.done.

What you see is what happens when someone oversprays a new finish over the old and doesn't prepare the surface properly. There may be places where the new finish sticks and other places where it peels off.  The best way to correct it is to remove the new finish with lacquer thinner and rags, lightly sand the bow with 800 or 1500 paper and refinish it.  Lacquer thinner will not harm the original finish.

I talked to Dan this morning.  Here's how he said to repair it.

1. Cut 1" strips for sandpaper the length of the paper and draw it across the area I need to refinish until the spar urethane is removed.  Use 150, 220, 320 grit.

2. Wipe the surface twice with 100% acetone

3. Spray with Krylon Fusion Clear Matte.  He said it will adhere to the Thunderbird finish he uses.  Let each coat dry before applying the next one. Get 3 or so good coats and then let cure for 3 days before using.

That sounds more like it... you could use 1500 grit for toilet paper.   

When you put those coats on, go easy with it. A good coat is a light even coat.
