I'm considering sinking a post in concrete in my backyard with a machinist's vise mounted on top, to work on bows outside when the weather is nice.  Anyone else keep a vise outdoors?  Will it remain in good condition?  Of course, I'd have to find a decent cover for it, and I imagine you have to keep it sprayed down frequently with WD40.  Any ideas on a discrete or diguised cover that wouldn't make my yard look like Hogan's alley?  (A plastic bucket or tarps won't do.)    ;)

Ahh, but if you use a bucket, it could double as a stool to sit on while working on your bow  ;)   :D

Adam,
Check out this vise made by Xyliss.  It was designed for the Swiss Army and I refer to it as a "Swiss Army Vise".  It is very versatile.

It clamps to anything , like a table, door, etc.; and can morph into many different things.  The removable plastic jaws are easy on the bow limbs.  I have had mine for at least ten years and it is very useful.  They retail for $199 so they are not cheap; I found a few for sale, used, on the web for less than $100.  It is made of magnesium, I think, so it won't rust outside.  Unclamp it and take it anywhere.

I tried to find an easy link to that vice but had trouble.  I went to Zyliss.com and did not find it there.  If I remember correctly, there is a tool company that has exclusive rights in the US, if I find it I will let you know.

Adam, Go to the dump and pick up an old weight lifters bench.  I see them at our dump almost weekly.  You can even adjust the height...tippit
