I would like to have the shelf a little closer to my hand, about a 1/4".  I was also thinking of radiusing the shelf to get rid of the blockiness.  Would I be compromising the strenght of the riser?  Anyone done this?  What did you use?  Rasp or dremal?

Charlie Lamb

I doubt you'd hurt anything by lowering the shelf a quarter inch.

A rasp or coarse file will do the job, though it will be a little slow going... which will help keep you from messing up.

Layout everything on masking tape first.

Charlie, Would lowering the shelf affect the tiller? I would think removing material from the grip to move the hand closer to the shelf would work better. Just a thought. Bill.

5 point, what you're talking about doing is exactly the same thing Fred Bear did to every one of the bows he hunted with.  bowdoc does it to all his personal bows too.

5'ster.I've done several of those modifacations, actually more like several hundred Jer is correct I do do that to all my personal shooters...But before you cut the shelf off, please have a look at the pic I added....It's not always the shelf to high...which lowering the shelf to much could cause a little tiller problem maybe..maybe not...But the the extra wood at the web of your hand is keeping your hand from fitting into the grip. Please take a look at this pic of an original 1970 Bear T/D and compare it with my personal bow.You will see what I am talking about pretty easy.....Better yet see if you can spot the bowdoc grip !!!!!!!!! bowdoc

Thanks for the visual bowdoc.  I'm going to give it a shot.  After studying my grip, I can see how I could remove material at the web of my hand so the shelf would sit lower in my grip.  I wouldnt mind seeing a pic of the profile of your bowdoc grip from the side if it would be too much trouble.

This should give you a little better view of where the extra wood may be in your grip......bowdoc
