Heavy-spined woodies?

Greetings All,

Just wondering if anyone knows where I could get some 115lb spined arrows made up that weigh at least 510 grains without a point? The arrow length that I'm after is 30" BOP. I'm thinking that cedar might just make the cut (I know it's rare), but maybe some folks with more heavy-spine cedar experience could set me straight!

If you could find cedars that heavy, they would be close to 500 grains bare shaft, but I've never seen standard size cedars that heavy, i.e., 23/64 inch shafts.  They usually top out at about 90-100 pounds.  Might reach what you're looking for if you can talk a manufacturer into making 3/8 inch cedars for you, but even then it will take a lot of wood to find the spine you're looking for.  Whay not just go to some hardwoods?

Surewood will have it in Douglas Fir, and they're better than cedar anyway.  The best wood shafts I've ever had the privilege of using.

Doug said they usually have spines up to as high as 130#.

I find spines in doug fir and cedars even up to 90#s very rare. I was told that in  athousand shafts ya may get a half dozen to spine over 90#s. Shawn

Luke "The Ursus" Woodruff made some purple hearts with his shaft shooter that came out very high spine that would do the trick for you.  Should easily surpass 500 grains.  Luke?

Check the hardwood suppliers. Ash, hickory, and ramin should make the grade, as well as maple and maybe laminated birch.

i have some that are 464 to 472, old rogue River stock that were special order.

Hey Ben I've had the same problem for years. My draw is 32" and with my bad form and a 65# bow I need 95-100# spine. I ended up going to carbons cause heavy cedars are a rare commodity nowadays.

The hardwood shafts just don't shoot the same as cedars, plus the smell adds alot of nostalgia for me.

Grizzlystik Safaris will do the trick, but for special occasions I'd like to have some wooden arrows (they're magical).

Anyway, I've e-mailed a few arrowsmiths, and so hopefully one of them will be able to come up with something.

Let us know what you find.  I've got the same problems as Biggie.

I was in Port Angeles, WA last summer and stopped to meet Roxanne at Hildebrand.  Her information regarding heavy spined shafts was identical to Shawn's post.

Have you called different shaft makers? I've had good luch when simple calling them and tell whoever I'm getting shafts from what I want. Might take a week or two or three for the right board to get milled but the shaft makers will keep an eye open for what you need. I just got some 500 gr @ 28 1/2 75-80# Sitka Spuce shafts without the point. They are way heavier then the Cedars I have. Ask and wait.

I have found POC in 85#-90# but no heavier. Even the 80-85# shafts weigh in at 415gr. So, with 150gr tips you are at 565gr. arrows.

Just matched up a dozen for a fella an hour or so ago.  110-120 lb spine or .250 deflection w/2lb weight on 26" centers, same as 2219 aluminum.  23/64" doug-fir  32"raw shaft, light ones hit  500gr on the scale.  Heavy ones 600 with the majority between 540-560gr    .

The arrow gods do bless a tree once in a while with their magic wands and give it superior quality just for us archers.  The trick is in finding,  identifying , and obtaining it.  Making little pieces of wood out of big pieces of wood is the easy part.  You see, It must be done whilst still a tree in the forest  as  clues are left in it's environment.  One must learn to read the clues not unlike the archer whom learns to stalk  and track the buck.  The hoof print in the dirt, the bent over branch from arrow gods wand as it passed over.  The speck of blood on the blade of grass,  the glint of magic dust left in the moss nearby etc.. These are things we cannot get nor learn from our local lumber yards/ wood suppliers... we can only learn them from  time as being archers in the field in persuit of the things we love
