Painting Alunimum Shafts

Is anyone here painting their alunimum shafts? If so do you use a primer or how do you get the paint to stick, It may be easier just to use a wrap?????

I have been painting aluminum shafts. After cleaning the shafts realy well with denatured alcohol and 0000 steel wool. I then spray several light coats of Krylon primer followed up wit what ever color I wish to use. After letting the paint dry and cure I then fletch using Fletch-Tite Platinum glue. I have had no problems with having the glue sticking of the feathers coming off while shooting.

Thanks Recurve, Everything you said makes sense, sounds like it will work fine, so thats the way I'm going. Thanks Again.
Ditch that glue and go to the tape, after one try you will be throwing rocks at the glue method.

Krylon here too. I like the platinum. I am in no rush>>>>some I dont paint back to the fletching some I do.

The only aluminum arrows I ever painted was the ones I hunted with. I just wrapped a paper towel aroung the fletching and spray painted the shaft and broadhead Krylon flat black, no primer.  The only preparation was to rub the shaft with a rag and some carb cleaner.  The paint never chipped or peeled and seemed to last forever.

I use Krylon too only no primer. I put on 2 coats of color and then 2 coats of Crystal Clear spray. Fletch w/ Duco. The only way it comes off is if the paint hits something really hard like angle iron.
Maybe I'll try the primer one time to see how it works.

If you want to use a color and want it bright, then use a wight base.

I've dipped alum arrows in Bohning white, then in Bohning fluor orange to make some flu-flu's that I can find in snow and brush.  It's sticking just fine.  I just wipe the shaft with acetone, then dipped.  Same material and process that I use to cap dip all of my arrows.  Works fine for just the top or the whole shaft.

I use the Krylon also,only on wood shafts.Works great.White base,preferred color,and about 3-4 coats of Krylon Poly as a sealant.Fletch tape holds excellent on the krylon.....
