I have no idea, but with a name like "the dismal swamp" there's probly some scary mutant squirrel that looks like a buck-toothed gorilla lurking around there.

Can't you get stuck in Dismal Swamp on the way to Candyland?  :)

Seriously, I think squirrel is pretty open year round in most places for bow (in most states?)

Does VA have a website like we have in NC for regs (NCwildlife)?

Dismal Swamp - gotta love the name.  :-)

You probably ought to check with your state game folks to be certain.

If you *do* happen to bag a "scary mutant squirrel that looks like a buck-toothed gorilla" I hope you'll be good enough to post a hero pic.  :-D

You can hunt squirrels on the Swamp WMA until Jan. 31.

There will be a spring season on the Swamp WMA from June 7 to June 21.

Six per day...

You can pick up a copy of VA's Hunting and Trapping Regulations and Information at most sporting goods stores or even Wal-Marts, K-Marts, etc.

Or you could just check the DGIF website:

I haven't ever been there but I hear once you get in the swamp everything looks the same so make sure you take a compass.

I haven't been there since high school, but wouldn't it be cool to float one of the entry ditches in a canoe and pop 'em from the water!!

By far the best book on the Great Dismal Swamp is Bland Simpson's beautifully written "The Great Dismal":  http://www.amazon.com/Great-Dismal-Carolinians-Swamp-Memoir/dp/0807847526/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201620623&sr=1-7

There is a great deal about hunting, the old hunters, and the hunt clubs, not to mention the flora and fauna and the Swamp's peculiar history. Robert Frost intended to commit suicide in the Swamp but he got so frightened when he actually saw it and realized that his body would probably never be found, he changed his mind.

The best way to canoe in is via the Feeder Ditch. You can still rent canoes just south of Deep Creek as far as I know. Lake Drummond is striking and very few people ever see it.

You can walk or bike in to it via the trail alongside the Washington Ditch. It's about 4 1/2 miles each way. Once April goes, the Mayflies and mosquitoes will eat you alive.
