elk hunting

Hello,
    I jjust made the switch 3or4 weeks ago.I go to Colo.elk hunting,and was wondering what setup would be the best. I should be getting my new bob lee recurve very shortly(I HOPE). It is 55#@28". Was wondering if 550 or 600 grain arrow would be enough. Thanks

I usually stay far away from these type of posts because there are so many bowhunters who love lightweight arrow/broadhead setups for hunting elk.BowHunting elk with a 55lb bow requires a broadhead/arrow combination that has a total weight of 650 grains. Now I know there are those bowhunters out there, including myself, that have killed elk with lighter arrow setups. Good for them. However, in true hunting conditions, elk deserve a heavy penetrating arrow, its that simple. Bill, I hope you research Tradgang archives and look at all of the experienced bowhunters out there and see what they recommend you ought to be taking elk with. T.

I hunt Whitetail w/650 grain arrows 55# tip recurve, overkill?? not when bones are a threat.  my thought would be to go heavier at least cross that 650 mark.

550 or 600 will definately do it, no doubt, but-more the merrier (to an extent). Course no experience w/elk so take it for what it is worth.

I agree with T. Downing.  I shot my 1st elk this year with pulling 53# on my longbow.  I shot a 660gr. arrow.  I got lucky and missed bone going and coming and got a complete pass through.  Read the Dr. Ashby penetration study thread or the great article in the current TBM they will provide a great deal of information on what arrow characteristics contribute most to penetration.  I also used O.L. Adcocks tuning process to get my arrows flying the best I could.

55#bow,easton 2018 arrow,5grain/in weight tubes,and a 125 grain magnus stinger=660 grains.

550 would cerainly work, but 600-700 grains will easily penetrate ribs for sure from that bow.  From that bow I would expect you will get around a 160 fps with 650, which would work great like T. Downing recommends.

question, that weight is from a 28"drawn bow arrows around 29"BOP. I have a shrew 54" 52#@26" 650grn arrows the bow shoots about 160fps. That should work too right? I know it's more impotent to have a very sharp BH and hit the right spot.

I think 650 grains with a well tuned arrow would be about perfect for elk,moose or bear.A razor sharp 2 blade like the eclipse,and a well placed shot should make for a short trail.

Good luck. By the way,the same setup can be used for deer or anything else.

Congradulations. What poundage bow were you shooting?

Thanks for all the info,There are alot of very knowledgable guys on here willing to help others,thats great. Nice bull overbo.Im leaning toward 650 and a 2 blade head.

This year: 53# @28 - 435gr gt 5575 - Silver Flame 2 blade.
Cow elk - clipped both scapulas and broke near ribs - broadhead buried just under off side skin.
80 to 100 yds and down. Don't know how she deserved anything heavier - got it done with a combo 200gr under the "required" wght. And will use similar again.
