Woke up early. Was excited to get a few shots in before I got on with the rest of my day. Sat up out of bed and my roommates puppy jumps up on me all wiggly and cute...with a familiar white with yellow striped feather in his mouth. I look over and see that all 12 of my arrows were now all destroyed.

My question now is does anyone know how to match arrows if I make them myself? Or does anyone know anywhere I can buy 31" feather fletched single arrows in east central Georgia/west central Alabama?

Did he actually break the arrows, or just chew up the feathers? If he just chewed up the feathers, just refletch them.

The longest one is about 20 inches now. They were carbon too so we swept everything up and weighed it to make sure he didn't swallow any. No bloody gums or anything so he's ok. But yeah, arrows are F-ed.

Only minutes before I read your post I discovered that my wife's puppy ate my favorite (one and only) llbean wool sweater.

I don't mean to take pleasure in the misfortune of another but I couldn't help but chuckle.

What shafts were you shooting? You might be able to just get some more at your local archery shop. If not, you are going to have to order them. If they flew well for you, just get some more of the same ones.

Go to your local archery shop, order them in if you need too if you want the same ones. You just need to know the "spine" you were shooting and the point weight since you already want 31".

Gold tip trads come pre fletched with feathers but I don't recommend them personally. I believe black eagle also sells feather fletched carbons.

Alternatively you can get the bare shafts and get them them to cut them, install points and fletch them or you can fletch yourself.

Gurge

Well...yeah. But money is an issue. I'd be ok with 3. I was shooting 400s at 31" long. I'm also into making as much as I can (partially because of money but also there's a bit of pride in it) I just don't know how to match home made ones.

Ari_Bonn

What do you mean by home made?

400's are your spine for the carbons.

length 31" you just need to remember what grain point you were shooting. If I had to guess I would say 125gr.

400 is the "gross" spine measured at 28" once you at the extra 3 inches and your point weight that is your "net spine" which is how you tune your arrows to the bow (the other 2 are nocking point and brace height but focus on the arrows since you were shooting before).

Aslong as you get from a decent company 400's cut to 31" and remember your point weight you will have matched arrows. (wood is the one where you pay more attention to spine and shaft grain weight).

Also you can cut them yourself with a hack saw but I wouldn't recommend. An archery shop with have a special machine to make the cut perfectly straight .

Gurge

By home made I mean cut from bamboo in my back yard or dowels from a hardware store.

Prairie Drifter

A .400 carbon spines out at amo 78.8. If you choose to use wood dowels, you'll need probably another 10lbs of spine. So you'd need 85-90 spine wood. Now, you would need a spine tester to test your wood dowels......

Ah I gotcha,

I have some experience a little with cane shafts.

Try cut the ones as straight as possible, if you need to straighten them heat will help. You need them to be straight enough to spine test them.

Match the spine within groups which means you need to have access to a spine tester. Also mark where the spine was tested as this is where you want it against the riser or as the cock feather(can be different as you go around the shaft)

You need to roughly match the thin vs thick shafts, its very possible to have a big fatty shaft be the same spine as a skinny shaft.  If they are naturally tapered the skinny side should go to the feather side. I would strengthen the nocks with braided fishing string if you are going to cut into the shafts.

Lastly you can weight match them with a scale.

Problem with bamboo is the nodes can be very large and the shaft will lose strength if you sand them down.

If you can get your hands on "Tonkin cane" the nodes grow very flush to the shaft. I believe amazon sells them from a company called "tiger shaft" them come spine tested but you will need to straighten and weight match them, water proof them. They are fairly inexpensive but require work.

Ari_Bonn

They are also extremely durable and can take a heck of a beating.

I'd rename the Pup..."Carbon"

Well if it was me I would think my roommate would be the one paying. If it was my dog you wouldn't have to say anything I would be telling you to get some new arrows at MY expense.

Gurge

I bought 3 carbon express predators for $6 a piece today. And it's the houses dog (between the 3 roommates) but I already have 2 so if the pup does anything wrong it's my roommates. Atleast while I'm mad.

For the term MATCH as in making them alike it is easy and cheap. Drive 2 nails in a fence or wall, level, and 28" apart.Lay the bamboo across the nails. Hang a weight in the middle of the arrow and mark on the wall how much it bends down. Sort out arrows that bend the same amount and they are matched for spine. Use a 2 pound weight and measure how much they bent and you will be very close to actual spine measurements. It can get way more technical but trust me it works and cost nothing. PM me if you have questions.     Ken

I made a mistake in earlier post. It should have been 26"   28" requires a 1.94 weight. Sorry for any inconvenience.     Ken
