Was wondering do any of yall spray paint your crowns on you wood arrows? If so what kind of paint do you use and do you seal over it? Or do you just seal up to the crown? Just wondering throw some ideas my way fellers

I seal over. If spraying, I use Rustoleum. Depending on color, I spray on a white primer. Then the crown color.

I seal with oil based poly.

Bud, you are spraying poly over enamel? I've wondered how that would work, and now I can assume it works ok..

Dip shaft once to seal, spray crown, crest, dip 2 finish coats. Oil based paint & poly

My clearcoat is 50/50 mineral spirits and Minwax gloss oil polyurethane3.

I believe I sealed these arrows with water based poly before and after spraying the crown. It's been a few years(2003) so I can't really remember.

I used Krylon white on some kids arrows I made a while back.  Sealed the arrows with Polycrylic first.  Didn't seal over the crown.

I really do not see a reason to seal the wood first then apply a paint. I only use two thin coats of paint spraying or dipping. I put clear coat over the whole shaft when done cresting.
I really like the Rustolem products and use some Krylon for some of the different colors.

I have found that masking tape can raise micro splinters on the bare shaft when removed if put in place before a first dip. I'm afraid of some of those splinters getting larger than micro when removing the tape, so I dip first for an initial seal.

If crown dipping, I don't do an initial clear seal.

I've done it. Not with wood arrows,but aluminum. And I used the Krylon that is designed for spray painting plastics. Like cheap lawn chairs. Worked excellent,and the paint has the same flexible agents at work as do automotive paints that are used. Prevents the paint from cracking when flexed. Just a little FYI.  rat'

I did find one time that when I used spray silver paint on wood arrows (they were sharp looking, dark stain, silver cap, white feathers, some black cresting) but the Duco cement wouldn't adhere. I did coat with poly after capping.  
Dunno if it was my method at the time or the properties of the silver paint.

Never tried it again.

I use wipe on poly in the silver can, then rustoleum spray paint, then wipe on over.  No issues yet.

I used either fletch tape or Duco on the fletching and still have and shoot them.

OK, Bud B I see what you are saying about the tape. I have had good luck using the 3M painters tape so far. When I dip I use a pencil line.
