Shot my longbow today that i got about a month ago. Its my first longbow and man am i satisfied with it.
Shoots like a dream. Will get some broadheads soon and then i will shoot them for a week or so before my warthog hunting trip. If i compare this bows penetration with my martin recurve that draws 52lb,its almost the same. I will feel confident to use my longbow for kudu and blue wildebeest  .

Just got my first longbow last week. I really like how simple and quiet they are.  Good luck on your practice and upcoming hunt.

Thanks, J. Please keep us informed of your progress. What kind of bow did you settle on?

I've just gotten a 45# longbow myself, and was looking up the arrows that would go with it.

Lets see, Francosis Squirra had an article in the 10/22/2008 editon in africanarcher.com.  He says you need a momentum of 0.40 for Blue Wildebeest and Kudu.

I'm shooting ICS Bowhunter 500 arrows at 31".  So, you may be different from that.  With a 185 gr head, I'm pretty tuned, but only have a momentum of 0.37 (total weight is 441 grains).

If I go to an ICS Bowhunter 400 with a 250 grain head, I've got a 540 grain arrow.  That's not bad:  GPP is 11.65 and FOC is 22.6.

With the ICS Bowhunter 400, now my momentum is 0.41.  This is sufficient for the animals you are hunting.

Last year, I shot a Blue Wildebeest with an arrow that had 0.47 momentum.  I did not have a pass through.  There was about 5" or 6" sticking out the far side. It was a slight quartering toward me shot.

Hope this helps.  Your bow should work okay.  Good luck... Only wish I could be there hunting Kudu with you.

I am experimenting with some rope in my arrow shafts to make them heavier. I have read some good articles and a podcast on it.

Good luck!
