Dominant Eye

You guys have been really great about answering questions!

So, for years I have been right eye dominant and shot a wheely bow and shot with one eye closed.......I have been shooting a recurve since Feb. of this year and just noticed that my eye dominant has changed over to left eye!

Will this have any impact on my shooting?  Will I need to change to a left handed bow?  I shoot with both eyes open.......lately I have noticed that my grouping was to the left a bit so I compensated and got back on target.

Very strange......of course I am pushing 50 and I have noticed my vision changing a bit.  I do wear contacts and have worn them for years.

The only big difference you'll see is if you are using a gap aiming method, its easier to focus on both the tip of your arrow and your spot & see the gap easier if you shoot with your dominant eye over the shaft.

I've been shooting right handed left eye dominant for many years and do pretty well with it. I think the key is not trying to focus on two things at once and just concentrate on the spot you want to hit.... your subconscious mind will adjust to anything.

Last year i went to 3 under and started gap shooting a lot more consciously and it was a bit strange at first.... but then i learned to set my gap first and let the arrow tip blur out as i focused on my spot.... Bingo!  Back in the saddle.

I am not sure what method I use, I simply focus on the target and shoot.

Have you had your eyes checked to see if the dominance change could be due to the need for a new prescription?

Also, What Kirkl said is true.  You don't have to switch.  Keep both eyes open and let your body work it out.

I think it depends on what aiming technique you use and how much difference there is in the two eyes. For years I shot right handed with very little success, I would do OK in the backyard but in the woods I was terrible. I think I did OK in the backyard due to the thousands of arrows flung. I am only 20/400 in right eye. Switched to left had bow and I was amazed at how much better I shot(still not good but much better) I was also surprised how quick I got used to lefty. Get a buddies lefthand bow and try it for a few days....

Actually drawing and shooting the opposite hand is really not all that difficult. Trying to nock the arrow on the string opposite handed is a pain in the butt though!!!!

Im having the same problem . I found out I have a cataract in my right eye, they are removing it next week I hope then I can keep both eyes open. This cost me 2 big bucks last year as I shot too much to the left, when the light started failing I would lose dominance in my right eye.

Like anything, with practice it won't matter.

Instinctive, split vision, gapping, you learn to use the eye over the arrow.

I'm left dominant and I shoot righty instinctive with both eyes open the dominant eye for me doesn't metter..
