Vanes for hunting

Well this is probably a topic that has been beat to death but has anyone else had good luck with vanes and an elevated rest? I switched to them about a year ago and had great success. Just wondering about everyone's experiences with this.

I spent most of the 80's shooting that type set up. One of the most accurate I've ever used. Matter of fact that's what I'm shooting in my avatar.

I actually have a set of arrows setup with vanes, but I shoot off the shelf. Vanes are much quieter anyway.

All these combos shot 250g Abowyer Wapitis to the same spot out of my TallTines Longbow and a cheap Hoyt Superest.




All that prep work was for a two week moose hunt up in Alaska. Never found the right moose but they were all still accurate enough for grouse.



Those are 3" three fletch NAP Quikspins. Blazers work great too.

Steve O, that is a crazy assortment of arrow setups. I have been toying with idea of using a bear weather rest again. Your above post is going to push me to do it.

I've recently switched from the shelf to a bear weather rest, but I am still shooting feathers. I may try vanes though.

I like having some vaned arrows in my quiver when I am in the middle of nowhere. Gives me confidence I will be ready no matter what the weather. Blazer vanes put a great spin on the arrow when you use their fletching jig.

The Browning Fire Drake listed in my signature is set up for hunting in the rain.  I have it tuned in to 4" 4-fletch vanes shooting off a spring arm rest.  Shoots great!  

I have the same arrows with 4 fletch feathers and they both shoot perfect off that rest.
