Advice on a youth bow/arrows

Over the years I've more or less learned what I like, or at least what I'm willing to give a try. My oldest turns 10 in a couple days and I'd really like to get him a "real" bow but I don't know where to start. He has had compounds, and the last year or so has shot one of those fiberglass "long bows" from Dicks. He loves to shoot, but the combination of cheap rubber vaned wood dowel arrows and that abusive fiberglass cheap bow takes its toll on him. I want to outfit him with an actual youth glove (easy enough), some actual good youth arrows (3 rivers has some feather fletched youth arrows that seem like a good starting point), but most importantly a good youth bow. I don't think hed like the chunky risers on some of the youth bows. Im looking for something a bit more like dads, one piece, sleek and sturdy. Anyone have some good leads where to look? Used is ok, but not auction site, dont like that place. Any to steer away from? Feel free to Pm me for privacy. Thanks in advance!

Also, whats an avergae weight for 10 year old boys. If 45-50 is a pretty standard for adult males, with some opting plus or minus for various reasons, is there an average for kids? My son is 10, average in size in every way, not skinny, not ovet weight, just... Normal. Is 20# a good weight to build up to and last?

Black rhino are good youth bows as well. My son is 9 and has a maddog..black rhino..and a bear kodiak cub recurve. His heaviest one is the cub..which is 30#. He only draws 18"...but doesnt have any trouble with the weight.

For arrows he just shoots some 1/4" wooden arrows with 3" feathers. They seem to fly good out of the light weight youth rigs.

I won an osage longbow on here last year for one of the grandkids.

Time to pass it on. It is 25@ at 22". Sound OK. don't get anymore like dad than that!!!

It's a self bow made by a trad ganger and he passed it on to me.

Don't buy the Easton take down youth bow with fiberglass limbs. It's like trying to shoot with a wet noodle. Impossible to tune an arrow to it. I'm not sure what age group this thing would be good for.

Got her a PSE Razorback, 30#@28". Nice starter bow.

call and speak with Mike at Mad Dog archery.

Nice guy and my 8 yr. old boy has a beautiful, custom made long bow from him. He also makes recurves. My boy picked out his own riser wood, limb & string color and Mike put a nice inscriptions from me to my son, on the limb.

All that for around $100.00 and it's 26# pounds at 25", Mike has options for you.

Shoots like any adult bow and it's a head turner in the trad world where I'm at...

Arrows: *1816's and 1916's fly just fine out of it and you can always buy 1/4 dowel for shafts and make your own woodies.
