I have an idea in my head that I would like to try out.  It involves a basic Judo point with some changes.  I have no desire to market a point, just make a dozen to try out. If they work, I have yet another box of points.

Does anybody have any idea what sort of wire is used to make the "springie arms" on a judo and does it take special work ( heating, cooling etc) to create the spirals or just a mandrel to bend around ?

Maybe the wire springs from a clothes pin???

I need to end up with more wire.  I am playing with ideas and you know how that goes, likely I am not thinking of something that will doom it.  But hey, what fun is not trying !

One can get spring wire in most any diameter . McMaster Car is the place for small amounts . It well work as is but should be heat treated for best results .

Spring steel wires found in most any hobby store.

The wire needs to be heat treated, then tempered. You know they make a wider version of the Judo, called a Condor?

ChuckC

I do, yup.  The change I want to make is lots different.  Its just an idea, prolly won't amount to much.

Do they bend and shape it first before HTing and Ting ?

Please post the results. There is a deep lineage in traditional archery past with making your own tackle. I try to manufacture whatever I can, for money's sake, personal taste, needs, Impatience, joy, etc. I always enjoy seeing what people make.

I know that the material that forms the tines on the judo point is critical.  Someone gave me a point very similar to a judo point that had five tines rather than four.  It looked great, and I was looking forward to using it.  The tines started bending after the first shot, and after a dozen or so shots were useless.  Why would someone go to the trouble of copying a judo point and put useless tines on it?  I dunno....

Think about the wire we use to use for making spinner baits!

motorhead7963

when making springs or coiling wire the material being used is already tempered.(Modern Marvels is a great show)

ChuckC

McD.  there are a TON of judo copies on E*** at cheap prices, coming from. .  another place.

Now you know why.

Chuck,  Many years ago when I was messing around with snaro points I went to the hardware store and bought .032 spring wire.  Though I don't shoot them much anymore they have maintained their shape over the years.  That spring wire came in 30" lengths if I remember correctly.

Is this for a business or only an exercise in fun?

ChuckC

For me.  I really don't want to deal with making them for a livelihood.  I want to make 6-12 and if they work well I will share the info with TradGang cause it might add to our collective fun.

Ok, thanks for clarifying.  My main reason for asking is that since you have no commercial interest you may find that you get some really helpful answers by posting some information here.  Maybe show a sketch of your design idea and get some suggestions on things you may not have even thought about.

Plus, I am very curious myself as I am a big fan of the Judo and have often thought of ways it could be improved upon.

ChuckC

I am waiting a bit on a request I sent in to Jack (Zwickey) before I post.  I don't know if he can make it or not, but I want him to have first chance.  If not, I will try to make some myself and try it.  If that happens, I will share my thoughts with the Gang.  As I said, it is just some thoughts, and it is not an improvement, but a change (for a related, but another purpose).
