Thoughts on being winded???

Well my wife finally had a wind where she could hunt a creek crossing that leads to an ag field.  It has always had tons of tracks and she was pumped to hunt it.  At 6pm 2 does and a fawn are about to cross the creek and walk on the main trail when her wind detector turned and pointed right at them.  The lead doe or "big shooter" in her words was 15 yards away snorted turned and bounded 10 yards and then all 3 walked away.  30 minutes later a doe and fawn hit the same spot and again she was busted.  This doe ran farther and snorted as she ran off.  She is wondering if this spot is ruined for the season.  My thoughts are that it is one of 2 places to cross the creek so it will still be good but the movement might be later in the evening.  I also think that by them not looking right at her and stomping that they knew something was wrong but not 100% sure as to what tree she was in.  What are your thoughts?  I say leave it alone for a week and then hunt it the next time the wind is perfect.

Yep, if they avoided every place they smelled a person around here , they would have to move to another state.

I think a week and a good wind direction should do it...

I have a stand to move that has gotten me busted twice with 2 different winds. Killer spot, but wind ain't gonna work!

Agreed. I got winded last night (we moved that stand to there first day in it) and from the sign I would have said I was good to go. I'm going to give it a week and like you if it wasn't just a fluke and it happens again it's going to have to be moved.

I've been busted several times hunting the exact same place from the exact same ground blind. I'm just not that good of a ground hunter and the wind shifts. Last year a nice 8 point and a 10 to 12 point buck busted me in the same spot on different days (same deer trail but they came from different directions). So I don't think it matters I'd hunt that spot again.

Now as Kenny said if the wind won't work then I would move on which is what I had do.

Had this happen many times. I dont know if it is worth it or not but I always move the stand location within the same area. I started doing this a long time ago because I witnessed a Doe checking the same blind location that she had busted me in the year prior and while it may have been a coincidence, that is why I still do it today.
I will move maybe 20 yards or even a hundred, depending on where the next best location is on the same run. In your case, I might move to the opposite bank but I obviously cant know what you have there.

Last night we pulled off a good hunt (wife and I) by using an alternate route that the Doe that busted us previously, started using afterwards. Worked out great, even though it was a lesser location than the first.

if all they did is wind you, give it a few days and good to go. if they wind you and then see you... thats a different story.  If they just wind you they don't know exactly where the scent came from, they only know a direction/area...

I agree that you should be OK, but Id also try to figure the wind.  I there something making it swirl in that location?  It won't take many times being busted and the deer will start to avoid the area or at least check very carefully before coming thru.

good advice.  Overhunting will cause more and more deer to avoid it.  Give it at least a week. Matriarch does will not tolerate repeats.

This old doe was seen by 3 different members of our Shrewhaven group who were hunting different sections of the Shrewhaven property on one of our hunts a couple of years back. She was the leader of a group of 3 does and two fawns and I shot her about 1 pm in the afternoon the first time in the stand.

Last fall I had a small whitetail buck that was tending his scrapes go around me downwind after I had snorted at him to get his attention since I did not have a whitetail tag at the time...I thought as soon as he smelled me he would bolt right out of the country...about 5 minutes later I saw him still tending his scrapes further down my backtrail like nothing had ever happened...have to say my scent did not bother him in the least
