So I twisted up a 16 strand Flemish string for my great Northern Ghost and it came out 1.5 inches short. Formula I used was 60" plus 17" divided by 2 minus .5 which said I should use my 38" peg. I use 12" from end to start my twist for the loops.Could it be I am twisting my strands to tight or is the way they should come out so they can stretch into the right length?

I have found that we each twist at our own rate.
So adjust the formula to fit your style.
Easier than trying to vary your twist.

Is this 1.5" short before any tension on the string?

Mac is also right about everyone is different on the twists and measurements of their jigs.

With a 12" in start, I would untwist it and try a little shorter for the loops.

Yes it was 1.5 short before any stretching. I have it now stretched about from a 8.5 brace height to 7.5. I am hoping it will stretch another .5 to my actual brace height of 7". If it goes like some of my other strings it will stretch forever. I made a string for my long bow and it seems to stretch .250 to .5 after every 100 arrows or so. Not sure whats up with this one. I have shot probably 500 arrows on it and it is still stretching.

What material did you use?

LBR

Yes, it will stretch, especially if you shoot in the heat.

After allowing to stretch on a strung bow, I take a small piece of leather and pinch the string with it and rub up and down to generate a little heat. This will stretch it to almost broken in length and then fine tune after shooting a couple of sessions.

All great info Thanks, Ray what part of TC are you in? We have property in Rapid City. Will be up there in November hunting.

South East side of town.  If you're ever in the area from May 1 to September 30, there's a great 3-D range on Elk Lake Road, not a mile north of M-72 (just east of Williamsburg), on the east side of the road. Look for the 12 foot long arrow sticking out of the ground.  It's a 30 target range and costs $12, but it's well worth it.  Sign up forms and lockbox for money is right at the start to the course.
