Lucky Break...Literally

After the initial surprise of the violent vibration and the limp string, I realized my string had completely broken. Only the serving held the two pieces together. Considering that a string breaking can often kill the bow and/or injury the archer, I count myself fortunate in both possibilities.

 

I was shooting at 20 yards and was surprised that the arrow still turned out to be a decent shot.  It must have broke just as the arrow was leaving the string.



I don't think I have had a string break in the last twenty years and the first time was when I was really young and shooting a tattered string        

I wasn't thinking that the round count was very high on that string, but obviously something went wrong.  I do use the metal crimp nock points, but I've never had an issue with them.  Just to be safe, I'll likely go with a tied on nock point on the next string.  It was a 10 strand fast flight type material which is plenty of string for the 65# draw.

The bow seems fine but I need to order another string to confirm the bow has suffered no damage.  

Are there any string sponsors that can fill an order sooner than the common couple week wait?

Glad you were not harmed; and I hope the same for your longbow. I have been fortunate to never had a string break....but a bow, yes  :(


I don't put much pressure when crimping my metal nocks. They don't need much to keep them there.

Severe pucker factor right there.  Last time that happened to me the bow flew out of my hand and skipped across to patio.  Glad you didn't get hurt.

Had the same thing happen on my Shrew a couple of years ago,never affected anything but my nerves and heart rate,LOL.  :eek:

I hate that for you, I'm sure it will rattle you (hasnt happened to me...yet). Hopefully the bow is fine. Allen has very quick service and makes an excellent string.

I would hypothesize that it broke when the string reached brace height.  Your arrow met it's mark and when the string returns to brace height, I'd guess that it also meets the highest strain of the shooting cycle.

Just a thought.

Regardless, I'm glad you're okay.

I had the same thing on almost the same Centaur about 3 years ago...scared the ****out of me. Went with SBD and will always change strings annually because you CAN'T see under the serving!
