Two years ago at k-zoo, I got to shoot some of Gregg Coffey's Java Man line up. They were all beautiful and great designs, but I was on the search for a short hunting longbow, and his Inferno and Elkheart fit the bill nicely. I really liked the design of the inferno, but he had an Elkheart that was such a sweetie I'd have brought her home if I had the cash. I left the show regretfully without a new bow, but had lasting impressions.

Fast forward to July of last year. I called Gregg and asked if he had any stock bows and to get on his build list. He sent me a list of bows that he currently had in stock, and I asked him to send me a 56", 51@28 Inferno. When I got the bow, I was, as always, impressed with his work. I shot the bow so well that I decided it would be best for that bow to stay with me. I sent him the check, but elected to stay on his build list (you know, just in case, lol). I hunted the Inferno all last season, and killed my first traditional deer with it.

As much as I like the Inferno, that damn Elkheart kept calling to me. Twards the end of last March, I recieved an email from Gregg inquiring if I was still content with the Inferno, or did I want him to build me another bow. I explained that while I do like brunettes, there has always been something about a sexy red head. Lol. When he asked what woods I wanted, we debated a little, then I said I really like the look of the Inferno with the cocobolo riser and curly Koa veneers with the water buff tips. He suggested that we do the same on the Elkheart as he had some great looking stuff to work with. I agreed and am happy with the results.

Now they are both great shooters, and quite different. The inferno's grip is much straighter and lower wrist and reflexed or concave shaped on the back. It makes for a very unique feel and is quite comfortable at full draw. Also, because of its riser design it seems to have a bit more stability than its counterpart. I can't prove it at the moment, but the Elkheart seems a touch faster and maybe a little quieter. Don't misunderstand here, they are both great performers and quiet shooters, just slightly different tones. They are both very smooth on the draw and shock free. I couldn't pick a favorite if you made me.

I'm going to bring this one back to the top for Dylan. He recently inquired about the cousins.

As for a little update, I'll be hunting with the Elkheart this season. I got her all tuned up, and broadheads are flying great and are shaving sharp.

I first shot the three bare shafts. Upon hearing the third rattle the first two, the pressure was on, and I jerked a bit on the last shot. I've never liked shooting tight groups anyway!  Lol. Those three shafts varied in length by a spread of 3/4". I opted for the middle length, fletched one up and shot some broadheads. Sorry, forgot to get any pics of that. Let's just say anything inside of 25yards is in trouble!

I'm really getting to know this Elkheart a lot better, and am looking forward to this season. The short length, at my 28" draw, is really smooth, with very minimal pinch. I find that if I think about my draw hand and finger pressure, I'll notice it just a bit, but nothing uncomfortable. If I don't think about anything but where I want that arrow to go, I don't notice anything. The string comes back to anchor and the shot is executed very fluidly. That tells me that this bow is very easy to get along with. There is really nothing to interrupt my concentration from the shot. I expect great things for the two of us.

But I do feel bad every time I look at the bow rack and that inferno is just sitting there. I swear I can hear her call my name sometimes! Lol. I haven't shot her in a while now, only because I don't like to shoot different bows during hunting season. But if I take one this season, I just may have to hunt with the inferno for whatever remains. Both bows are a joy to shoot, and having gotten my first, the inferno will always hold a special place in my heart. Lol.

Good luck to everyone this season! Stay safe, and may your arrows fly true.
