Shelf/strike plate question?

Hey guys, do you use a separate piece of material for each or a one-piece unit?

And if you have any theories why one way is better than the other, I'd like to hear that also.

I use two pieces -- one for the shelf and one for the plate. I can be a lot more tidy in getting them installed this way. For me, the fact that I can get them installed better this way is the advantage.

I've been using 2 pcs also, not so much so the feather can go thru, but because I have trouble getting the rest down in the corner of the riser.

Also with a radiused shelf, the thing just won't fit right, gaps at back or belly....

Yeah Kenny, I think the next one I install which will be shortly will be a two piece because of the reason you gave for the radiused shelf.

When I install my own it is two piece...my Robertson Fatal Styk still has the one piece leather it came with and that bow has shot a lot of arrows

I use 2 separate pieces. A Bear rug rest and either a calf hair or leather plate.

Two pieces here also, helps me think i'm getting better feather clearance when I shoot.  Am I?  The voice in my head says I am.

I use two pieces as well.For a sde plate I like a thin piece of calf hair.And calf hair for the rest or sometimes a piece of velcro.

I think 2-piece are easier to install, but I like the above reason best. I can have two different materials and can play with side plate thickness without changing the height of the shelf.

Looks like most like the 2-pc rest material.  I have been using a small dot of Velcro on shelf, maybe a little under 3/8" and a little bigger one for the side plate- 3/8 to 7/16".

And a little bigger side plate dot yet if I need a paper match under to stiffen the spine slightly.

Depends on the bow.  I use one piece of leather for most of my one-piece longbows.  Two pieces of velcro for most of my larger riser TDs.

This is serendipitous, I have been wondering myself if I should try to do a one piece again or two piece it. I have an older longbow that I recently purchased.  It had the shelf and side plate as one piece, also the rounded hollow spot where the two meet.  I took the one piece off so I could take some material off riser and get the riser face a little closer to center.  I have tried a couple different single piece patterns and I think there is going to be a void in the corner where the shelf and side come together. I have been leaning toward two pieces and up comes this thread post.  thanks Kenny!  I really enjoy reading, watching, and learning on this site.

I have always used two pieces with a groove but I bought a Robertson Wolfer that had a one piece leather. Th bow shot well with the leather but I had it camo dipped and when it returned, I went with a Martin double then a Velcro. I ordered a SBD string for it so I have not settled on a rest material. It is hard for me to believe the spine requirements just by changing the material.

I usually do a 1 piece leather. Seems to hold up better than other materials. I use a piece of whatever leather I wrap the handle with.
