For the love of woodies

I start by saying that I am not a professional at traditional archery but do love it.I purchased a practically new centaur 52@28 62" long bow on sep 25 last fall from here on the classifieds. I shot my Easton 2117 traditional alluminum arrows and killed a buck opening weekend. I shot all winter with these arrows and thought I found a gold mine the way it performed but was I in for a suprise. A week ago I picked up some 60-65 cedar arrows and wow. Not sure if it's possible but the bow loves them quieter than ever and groups at 15 yards that I thought was impossible. I'm writing this to see if anyone else has ever experienced a bow that loves wood arrows above all others.  My confidence has never been higher I'm ready for turkey's ( I hope).

All mine do.

But then in 40+ years I've never tried any other shaft material in my recurves or longbow.      

(THough I did use five loaner carbons at a DART shoot when I was out of town.  Right back to wood ASAP).

i just finished putting together my first set of woodies (df from Surewood)I'm very impressed at at how well they shoot and how quiet they are.

They are addictive.  I am in the process of trying to find some test arrows.  Right now I found that my aluminums are too weak and barely long enough.  I picked up a few GoldTip  shafts to use indoors for now. Ironically I tested one left at the club and found it to fly very well for my bow.
At my local club the indoor range and most of the field butts are compressed layer targets so wood arrows are problematic.  However the weather will soon turn and stump shooting will begin.  That is where woods really shine.  My old shooting partner dug out his wood shaft stash but it looks like they are too stiff(60# plus) or if in my 50-55# spine, they are too heavy(ash and maple)for me.

The best part about woods is that when you break one stump shooting and the pieces of shaft go flying, you are not littering.  You are just returning it.

Unfortunately if you shoot at compressed target backers you will learn that there is a down side to wood.  The finish heats up due to the friction when they stop in the target (especially 3-D animals)making them very hard to remove.  Sometimes the tips are even pulled off of the shaft and left in the target to become an arrow wrecker for someone else.
Bag targets and stumping lend themselves well to woods but until the weather improves and the snow melts, I will be shooting aluminum and carbons indoors.

Just rub on some bar soap and buff with a rag. They will remove from the target much easier and save the finish. Some finishes are better than other of course.

Arrows are suppose to be wood! I won't shoot anything else. Once you learn how to straighten and dial them in, you won't want to shoot anything else!JMO

Most trad bows are happier shooting wood arrows.

Wood just feels right with some of my longbows... Don't get me wrong, I like 2016's (even my bent ones) but woodies, when it comes to hunting makes things real! IMHO Brings me back in time....
