Switch to Carbon's?

I have shot aluminum arrows since 1984.  Time to order new arrows.  Never tried carbon's ...thinking of trying some of the GT blem's from Big Jim.  Any thoughts from those who have already done this?  Probably should leave well enought alone, but just wondering.  I need to get more arrows either way.  

I find 2117's fly good out of my 64" Two Tracks longwalker.  In fact it can almost handle 2018's the same, they are just a tad weak.  They are cut at 30" and I draw 29".  LB's are at 53#.  I have about 150 grains on the tips.  Would this put me in the 5575 or 3555?

My guess is you're in the middle. Shoot me a PM and I can send you one of each cut to 31" to try out. You can't beat Big Jim's Blems, been shooting them exclusively for the last 4 or 5 years.

If your bow is 53#'s at 29"s and your bow is cut to center, I would start with a full length 5575 and 200 or more grains up front (this will give you a 525g + arrow). If your 53# at 28" and you draw 29" and bow is cut to center, you'l likely need to cut off as much as a couple of inches but i would still start at full length and work your way down.

53#'s at 29"s and bow not cut to center will likely need a 3555 cut short with 200 plus up front.

If you have been shooting aluminum  for so long and they work I see no reason to change since those 2117 and 2018 arrows are still a very popular shaft.

I got a couple dozen of Big Jim's blems and they work great with the application of some of his advice. For myself, I value knowing the things are straight and consistent. So I guess that just leaves me at fault when I miss.

Being new to carbons is no longer a situation to be afraid of. You will easily end up with the best penetrating, best flying, longest lasting arrow you have ever used.

Don't be afraid to try carbons...especially coming from aluminum.  It might be a harder choice coming from wood like I did.  I started shooting the Beman MFX / Easton Axis skinny shafts several years ago and I have enjoyed excellent performance, and saved myself a boatload of money on arrow shafts!  They last so much longer than wood and worse case you might only have to replace a nock or refletch a shaft from time to time.  But you won't break many.  I started out shooting aluminum and found them easier to break/bend than a good quality Doug Fir wood shaft.

I switched to carbon from wood & aluminum and saw a big differwence in penetration with the front loaded shafts. I would go with the 55/75 and if to stiff try using a 50gr brass insert as well as a heavier point.

The cool part about carbon shafts is they are dead striaght, or broken... nothing between.

Tried carbons, prefer wood and aluminum. Personal choice for sure.

I've always been open-minded about arrows and have enjoyed carbon, aluminum, fiberglass, and wood. I am currently shooting barrel-tapered ash. I would love to try carbon again, because I've become very interested in fooling around with Extreme Forward of Center arrows as I drop draw weight in an attempt to work through/around some non-archery related shoulder injuries, preferring to avoid surgery, if at all possible.

I hunt with a back quiver and I can't stand excessive arrow length. I have a 26" draw and my arrows are cut to a non-negotiable 27" to the back of the broadhead. I am currently down to 40# at my draw length, and carrying a carbon-limbed, ILF recurve.

I'm not trying to steal this thread, but, on the subject of going to carbons, is there ANY hope of coming up with with a short carbon arrow, with a lot of weight on the front end, out of my set-up? It seems like everyone is starting with a full length shaft, trimming it down to optimal bare-shaft flight, and living with whatever length they arrive at. The idea of four or five inches of shaft sticking out in front of the shelf at full draw, gives me fits!

Carbons are the ticket!

Owlmagnet, Whats great about the Gold Tips is being able to cut your shaft to your length and add weight forward or back if you need to. You may have to go to a 15/35 to cut that short an arrow to work for you but it is doable.
