I hope it is acceptable to post this..

My wife bought me a Garmin Oregon 450 and i was wondering if anyone had any tips for a new gps user.  I have never used one other than on my smart phone.

A few things i would like to know,

What maps do you use?  Do you worry with something like birdseye? or do you just worry about the way points?

I have seen several options for free topo maps.  I would like to see some type of structure other than a white screen while trecking in, but i don't have to be looking at aerial photos.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Check this site, good maps for free after you figure out how to load them.
Get out and play with the gps; if you are into geocaching, that is a good way to learn the system.

REI and other places offer GPS classes, and just take it with you for walks and drives etc. If you google stuff like Garmin maps you will get a bunch of hits come up.

I use the site centaur posted.  There is a learning curve but they have tutorials.  I love my Indiana topo on the 450.  I have never messed with the birdseye but it would be really cool I bet.

John, I can not seem to figure out how to upload the maps. lol.

I would consider myself very computer savy, but its not being very nice. lol.

I bought the mapping chips for my state for all three of our Garmin Rino 650 from           www.huntinggpsmaps.com
Seem to work well, and after you have worked with it a while, you can determine ownership boundries, zone designations as well as topography.
