Best shelf material to use with carbons?

Greetings All,

I am using calf hair with my carbons and it seems to wear out pretty fast.  I'm shooting Gold Tip Expedition Hunters (just a black shaft).  I'm wondering how much drag I'm getting due to the wear?

Is there a better shelf material that will stand up better to a black carbon?  I do notice on my longbow that I don't get the wear with a CX Trad (thinking the finish is slicker and not causing the wear)?

Thanks in advance.

Happy hunting,

An archer tries to find ways to shoot further more accurately, a bowhunter tries to get as close as possible to ensure his shot is accurate.

Sometimes a rest will show wear quickly due to overspined arrows. How your arrow tune? I like the calf hair rests and side plates, seems to hold up well for me.How is it wearing out?

i use a couple pieces of smooth leather and it seems to hold up well.

I like seal skin but, it's too hard to find so, I use velcro. You might try using some carnauba wax on you shafts.

X2 the "soft" (non-hook) side of Velcro.

I got a lot of wear on velcro before I fixed some tuning problems.

I like the calf hair better than Velcro, but Velcro is so so so much more convenient, it's all I use now. Never tried seal skin, if I ever come across some I probably will try it

The wear is just a straight line right where the arrow sits on the shelf and the strike plate...

Pulled the calf hair and put on Velcro dots and I was likin the results...I just think the black unfinished shafts are a little rougher than shafts with a finish, be it camo or "wood grain"...  I may try the wax too.

I appreciate all the good tips guys!

I have tried just about everything and calf hair is the quietest for me with both carbons and aluminum. Excessive rest wear is probably an indicator of something else. I have been using the same piece of clipped calf hair for 5 years now.
