Bud B.

Walked into my stand this AM. Leaves were not so crunchy but I was quieter than usual. I was wearing my red headlamp. Every 10-20 steps I hit a short light grunt hoping to keep any deer in the area from being too alarmed and running off.

Well.....I get to my stand and notice the half moon shining fairly bright and I turn off the red light and walk to my stand to climb up. I reach my stand and grab a rung and about 15-20 feet directly behind my stand I hear footsteps. I think to myself, "There's no way it's a deer. Maybe a rabbit." It continues waling and it doesn't sound like a hopping rabbit. It walks away from my stand and halfway up the hillside behind it and then I knew. "WHEEZE!" That whistling alarm sound alerting every deer within a 1/4 mile that this area is a danger zone. Busted.

I sit until the sunrise blinds me. The stand is a good dawn stand and afternoon stand, but not a morning stand once the sun peeks over the treeline.

Maybe this evening.....

I think it's that little button buck from earlier in the week. He may test my boundaries if he shows.

That sound is getting to be annoying...even found a mule deer doe that does it

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

DDave - just this morning actually and more than once

Hah.  I woke up Saturday morning, after taking what was supposed to be a short nap in the trees, to find a doe just about standing on my longbow.  What does one do in this situation?  Nothing but watch her walk away.  I tried to ease into a shooting position when she was about 10 yards away, but of course I spooked her at the slightest sound.  Dang.

Hey, Tom,

Any encounter that close with a deer is a wonderful experience.  Too bad your young huntress wasn't with you! She'd have given you what-for over falling asleep!   :bigsmyl:

You're right about that, Dave.  When I told Kelly about it she was laughing at me, not with me   ;)

Sorry about that for you.  At least you have game.
