I have watched a lot of videos and read a lot of posts on how to sharpen Simmons Sharks with a KME broadhead kit. I finally decided on using a file, half round diamond rod, and a butchers steel to obtain a sharp edge on my broadheads. After my first pass with all three I had a decent edge that would cut hair off my leg. The only problem was that too much pressure had to be used to cut the said hair and it wasn't a clean razors edge type of cut.
So with a goal in mind I took a stroll in my basement to see what I could concoct. I found myself looking at my sand paper. I remember reading an article a long time ago about getting a "scary sharp" edge on hand planes using sand paper. Well I know it can be used but how is what I asked myself. As we know the concave nature of the Simmons makes sharpening difficult and using the sand paper flat just wont work. I decided to wrap the sand paper around my butchers steel. It works ok but I didnt have the control I wanted. So I did some more wondering and eventually found a piece of 1in OD PVC (aprox 15 in long) pipe and the light bulb went off. I sprayed the PVC with some spray glue and wrapped the sheet around the pipe. Then I went to work on my BH.
I started at 10 stokes a side counting down to 1 while alternating sides. What I had left was a mirror finish that would shave hair like a straight razor. I had control of the pipe and never was worried about cutting my self. I was able to keep the 25 degree angle that the KME is set to. I may try to go on with finer grits if I can find some in the 3000-5000 area.
