Here's the deal. I was asked to build a set of arrows for a benefit and auction for the Granite Mountain Hot Shots down in Arizona. They're the firefighters that died in the wildfire near Prescott, Arizona.

I'd like to put "Granite Mountain Hot Shots"6-30-13
on each of the arrows.

I usually dip the shafts twice in MinWax water based Polycrylic semi-gloss...crest, then dip again.  I've tried some test arrows with 4 different pens  to write on the shafts. I've written over the finish, then dipped them again after a reasonable amount of time. So far every ink has run!

I tried a regular black Sharpie, and it didn't run. So I bought a fine tip black Sharpie...it ran when dipped! Apparently the ink formula is different in the fine tip Sharpie's?

Does anybody have any thoughts or experience writing on under a finish with a certain pen whose ink doesn't run?  Is there another type of finish that I could use and the ink won't run?

The pens I've used are some that I use to decorate turkey bones...and I use a spray version of the same MinWax product. The ink doesn't run under the finish on the bones. But for some reason it runs where applied over the finish and dipped again. I tried to spray over the writing thinking it would seal it before I dipped...but sure enough, it ran.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Ron

Ron, you might try this, its a DecoColor extra fine point, paint marker found at nearly all craft stores. Its not an ink, but is actually paint in a pen that can be applied as simple and precise as a marker, if not more so.
Hope this helps,  Paul

Either that or maybe some Testors paint (like you use on models) and an old fashioned dip the point in the ink pen.

I thought about trying to go that route with the Krylon Short Cuts that I use for cresting, but an arrow shaft is a mighty small non-flat canvas!      :)

I'm assuming you're talking about wood arrows so this would be heresy, but what about a One Stringer wrap with the info on that?

Yes, these are wood arrows.  What is a One Stringer Wrap?

I use these on my bows, it's basically India Ink in a pen type device (its a refill for an actual pen) I have used a lot of different finishes over the last 18 years and nothing has made them run. They have a nice tip for writing in small areas too.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, much appreciated!

That's very awesome Steve! I'm glad I'm able to be a part of it! My set of arrows are small beans compared to many of the other items, but I hope somebody will appreciate them!

SCATTERSHOT

Just a thought, but maybe you could use a spray coat over the lettering to keep it from running. Thanks for your part in honoring these guys.

I know some arrow builders that use blank decal stock and print the text on it, peel and stick to the shaft, spray over with Krylon Crystal clear.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions folks!

Here's what I settled on. I went to a local craft store to get a DecoColor paint marker and ended up buying one, plus a produce called IDenti-Pen that an employee recommended.

The DecoColor did NOT run after dipping in poly, but even the extra fine tip put out too much paint/ink for what I needed.

The IDenti-Pen also did NOT run under the poly, and it has a fine point on one end and X-fine point on the other.

So, if anybody needs a permanent marker that seems to work under polyurethane and perhaps most others finishes....check out the IDenti-Pen.

Thanks again everybody!    :campfire:

Any chance of posting a pic of the arrows? Your work is excellent and I'm sure we'd all like to see the result.
Good on you for helping out.
