I have a very unique situation which I want to hide along a fenceline and ambush a large buck in the area but I don't want to put out my double bull blind and advertise my spot because it doesn't look very good to most people, but I've seen the same two bucks using the same location for a while now.

Pete Iacavazzi (thank you brother) suggested I build a natural blind along the fenceline (excellent idea) and also wear a ghillie suit (great idea). I am wanting to know what there is to know about buying/making a ghillie and how to use them most effectively.

Thanks for your insight and thanks again to Pete.

I can guarantee Charlie (Cyclic-Rivers)will chime in with some great advice for you, he recently made his own ghillie suite and it turned out great!

So how about it Charlie, where you at?

I have a tan RS ultralight with face mask and boonie.  I can't even begin to know how many times I have worn it.  I am putting pennies together to buy a second, a green one, if they are available.

I personally won't even screw around making my own.  These (RS) are great.  Mine has no yarn, is relatively light weight, is not hot and it has worked extremely well for me.  I hunt more from the ground now than I do in the sky.

I made a suit by sewing a volleyball net to ACU's and tying on burlap strips, turned out great, but warm and heavy.  I used a boonie hat which works best for me.  If you make your own suit, you can build it anyway you like, any colors, but a lot of tedious work.  I made another jacket for hot weather with light bedsheet type material instead of burlap, and just arm/shoulder coverage.

I am building a second ghillie currently- they are really great, but do take some time. they also require a fair amount of shooting practice while wearing them.

I bought my Rancho Safari ghillie last year, and wish I hadn't waited so long.  Unbelievably close encounters with both wildlife and people and none of them had a clue I was there, well that is until I stood up on some VERY enethical, unsportsman that walked right thru the bedding area at 5 PM on opening day.  At less then 10 feet, he screamed like a little school girl.  Wish I had that one on camera.

I have had deer at 7 feet (to close to draw on) and birds land not only on my arrow, but on ME.

So yes, I can say I'm a believer, in the use of some sort of Ghillie.  Be it self made, or store bought.  I can also say I don't think I have the talent to make what Rancho Safari is selling, that's why I decided to get off my wallet this time.

Ghillies really work well, and if you incorporate foliage from your immediate stand area, they're even better. But yes, shoot often while wearing them, they'll demand some trimming!

The buck in the picture was stalked and shot using a Rancho safari ghillie. I passed on the shot at 10 yards and as he walked away I had a change of heart and took the shot at around 25 yards.
Actually shot over the heads of two doe antelope that were drinking in front of me at about 5 yards. They work!!

Check out the All Predator Calls Kill Suit.  It's much lighter than a traditional ghillie, and the price is right.  I have one and am very happy with it.

Here is a link to their site.
