Minimum poundge and three blades

I am waiting on a 47# Fedora recurve.  This is the lightest recurve I have ever owned but it time to admit that I was over-bowed.  I would prefer to hunt with it this fall and I am really becoming a fan of the VPA three blade heads.  However,  I have concerns about the limited draw weight with the three blade vs a two blade head.  Arrows will be XX78s in either 2016 or 2018.  Your thoughts?

No problem, used them for the several years.  My 2 bows are 46#@28" and I draw 29" when not under the influence of "buck fever". I've admittedly  killed a bunch of deer probably only drawing 27" when I was!

I wouldn't think nothing of it - go hunting!

Just make sure they are really sharp! I shoot 50# at my DL and stick with wide (1 1/2") 2 blades.

On another note, unless you are planning on loading up the front end of your arrow or you have a very long DL, at 47# you may want to look at a 1916 instead of the 2016 or 2018.

If you are thinking about the long three blade VPA's they should work very well on deer and they come in heavier weights that would suit your spine needs too. I have had 2 of Mike's recurves and they are shooters.
On bigger animals like Elk and larger Pigs a two blade would be a better choice for the lighter bow IMO.

Why not use a four blade? correct me if i'm wrong but a four blade will out penetrate a three blade with all else being equal. From my understanding, 3 cutting surfaces on the 3blade gets less penetration that the 2 cutting surfaces on a four blade. Four blade should give a better blood trail too. I like my 4 blade muzzy phantoms.

I`ve killed a few critters with bows around that weight with Woodsmans. No problems. RC

You will have no problems with penetration.

Killed my first buck with a similar poundage and VPA 175 gr - don't think twice about it.

Using some skinny carbons would make this set up even better if you're interested....

I always preferred a three blade.  It is in my head, but I prefer to align the blades with the fletching.

Any of you guys used the Woodsman Elites? And on related note, do you sharpen the three blade heads such as VPA, Woodsman, Snuffers on a flat stone?

Smith diamond file works great. If you want to, you can finish up with a few light strokes on a ceramic stick.

I would tend to agree with Bjorn. No problem with deer. But the bigger stuff I would use a two blade. You know they used to make heads that had more than four blades. They didn't penetrate that well. Look at it this way. The arrow only has so much energy to impart. Two blades will use up that energy slower than three, allowing the arrow to go deeper. Sometimes you need that extra penetration. Gary
