BEST TIME OF ELK SEASON

Any time I can hunt. Although I like the second and third weeks in September. I think another thread like this came up a few weeks ago. Something about which week for elk in Colorado... you might find it with a search.

I like hunting the third week.  The weather is cooling a little, the bulls are getting more active, and the final week of the Oregon season usually see's every person with a mechanical projectile launching device out in the woods!

I have some wallows that I'm going to sit on this year religiously during the first week of September. The bulls seem to really pound the wallows during that first week of the month...while I'm off running all over the mountains looking for them!    

But anytime you can be out in the mountains with a bow and pointed sticks...can't be a bad time!

 I can relate to this!!!!!
    I am going to try this myself.  I love still hunting and spot and stalk. But I'll give this a try the first week also.

The trailcams I have out in the Cascades and over east confirm that the bulls hit the wallows more the first week of September then the rest of the rut. At least where I stomp around!

In eastern Idaho, the first week over water holes is great--especially fresh bubbling springs.  The further you get into the third and fourth week, the cooler it gets and if you are going to get any bugling action, this will be the time--having said that, most big bulls have learned that much bugling at all is like ringing a dinner bell for wolves. HEY, COME TO THINK OF IT, ALL FOUR WEEKS ARE GREAT AND WHAT YOU WAIT ALL YEAR FOR!!!

Like Ron said though the last week here in Oregon is NUTS! They may as well open up rifle season as well.

I like to chase deer the first week and then move to elk. I have always hunted eastern oregon but this year I will be trying to learn a few spots in the cascades since I have a new little one at home I am thinking I will get more hunting in if I can make day trips to please the boss lady

There are advantages and disadvantages to everything. My son and I have had good luck right at the beginning of the season. The Elk have not been pressured by people; but the bulls are sane. Later the bulls are crazy but the animals avoid moving around in the daylight. Go whenever you can book the time and if you can get in a scouting trip or two do it.

I love the first week of October here in Montana.  The bulls are screaming, most of the other hunters are out of the woods and the weather is usually cooled down a bit.  Most vocal time for elk in my opinion.
