Anyone ever spent any amount of time in a Whelan or Baker style, lean-to tent?

I'm seriously considering one for decent weather camping, rendezvous etc... but I've never actually been in one. I'm told that they're the 'ultimate shelter' but I'm told that about every shape, size & style of tent ever made.

I have used mine for extended camping in New Mexico and Oklahoma. It has withstood the elements (including high winds, snow and rain) very well. No condensation or leaks. Tons of room. Mine has heavy wall aluminium collapsable poles. Sewn in floor and no see um netting.

Thanks Charles.
That Baker looks huge! I hadn't thought of the addition of the netting & down here, that'd be invaluable in summer.

Rob, I have found that the Baker style is really a pretty versatile. with the front open, it gives you an open concept shelter ,close it and its , great in foul weather and with the addition of a pipe jack, it good for all seasons, and as you can see in Mr. Sinclaires pics, the  side curtains expand your floor space . Ive got 2, a 9x9 and a small one man, wouldnt tradem for nothing.   [/IMG]   [/IMG]

The enclosed area on mine is 7' x 7', overall  size with alcove is 7' x 14', a ton of room for two people. An additional canvas flap with stove jack can be used to completely enclose alcove.
I really like the artwork on moleman's. I am going to do some on mine this summer, I'm thinking Panther Cave motif.

Snakewood:  I think I have the same tent.  7x7 footprint and 7 foot tall.  It's a Frost River.

Regardless, height is something you want to be thinking about Rob.  Many of the baker tents are smaller, 6 feet high in the front, and two-person models five feet or less.  With the 2-foot back wall, it's not possible to stand up in most of them.  They're sort of crawl into and sleep on the ground tents.  Even a cot will have your feet touching the back wall or roof if you position your cot perpendicular to the front.

The canopy and side walls are very versatile though in terms of providing shade and cover, and a view.
