New To Trad With a Browning Wasp, Question

Well today I went out and bought my first adult bow to get back into Traditional Archery, I went to get a Browning Cobra but my ape like arms made it stack like crazy. Earlier in the day I went to the Pro shop and remeasured my draw to be currently 29, the guy said as my form builds I Should expect to be 29 1/2- 30 Inches, Which leads to my current question I ended up buying the Wasp because it was a little more suitable for my draw.I was told that I could buy a longer string, then what was on it to help prevent stacking and get a better draw length, but by doing this I risked dropping my poundage from 50 pounds, down to 45 pounds. The poundage is not really a problem because in my eyes plenty of deer can be dropped at 45 pounds if it does decrease. So the bow is a 56 AMO, Should I purchase a B-50 at 53 inches or is there any other suggestion and experts would like to share? If I knew how to post pictures I would, She is a really beauty

You won't gain draw length by putting on a longer string all that does is lower brace height( measure of distance from bow to string) . I would say your pro shop gave some less than steller advice.

Draw weight is a product of how far you pull the string , say 50#@28 at  the recomended brace should gain 2-3 pounds per inch of extra draw length . Hope this helps. Drew

The brace on that bow should be around 8" and needs to be within a certain range to get the bow quiet and tune properly . I would recomend getting together with other trad guys in your area and get hands on help . Where are you in N.Y. ? alot of guys around willing to help. Drew

If I add a 53 inch String instead of a 52, will it let me be able to pull the bow back with less stacking and to full draw is my main question. I might of worded it really awful, my apologies

I would not recomend a longer string , it won't help with stacking and will just lower brace height and cause other problems.

At the risk of being the odd man out, I'd recommend a 58" or longer bow if you're truly a 29" draw and you think you'll get longer in the end. The Wasp is a good bow but it is also older. Drawing it back beyond 28" does put added stress, however, you very well may be able to shoot that one for years at a longer draw without issue.

Go with the recommended AMO length string and brace, and tune to your shooting style from there.

I love the looks of the old Wasps. Yours looks to be in very good condition.

Yea, my next bow is most likely going to be a custom, I just wanted to get a nice short bow for when I am up north in the ADKS, But thanks for the help so far,  I am hoping to make this one last for about a year or two before dropping the big bucks on a nice custom. Thanks again for your help guys

The Wasp is a nice bow, but the ones I have shot all stacked quite a bit after 27-28" draw.  29" headed for 30 is going to be uncomfortable with a Wasp.  There are many other bows that will serve you much better.

Correct brace height is very important with a recurve and string length is how you adjust the brace.  A longer string won't help you much at full draw, but will really mess things up at brace.

Your bow is 56". You need a Dacron string AMO 56". The string inside will be about 4" shorter. Notice the string grooves in the upper part of the limb.

If you place the string on the bottom limb, and lay it against the top limb, it should end up pretty close to the bottom of that string groove.

Again, you need an AMO 56" string for your bow and after you string it up, hopefully with a bowstringer, measure the brace. From inside the throat or where you grip the bow to the center serving on your bowstring.

After a bit of shooting, the brace may move a little but not much with Dacron. You shouldn't have to play around with the brace too much.

That bow is too short. And if you get a string, should be a B-50, what you need on older bows. I second the idea that you need alonger bow, 60"+ woudl be best, you will shoot better, enjoy it more, stay with it longer.

I'm a big fan of Browning bows and draw almost 30" myself.  Instead of a 56" Wasp (a fine bow) I use a 62" Explorer and can get away with the 58" Cobra II.  58" is about as short as I like with any recurve bow as finger pinch makes release and comfort a problem below that whether they stack or not (a bow that stacks sharply right at your draw length can be a good thing for consistancy).

You can reduce brace height with a longer string but on that bow should not go below 6-1/2" from the deepest part of the grip cut-out to the string.  7" is optimal and 8" would be about as much brace height as you would want.

The browning wasp is a great starter bow for you but it is too short. A longer string would probably add to more hand shock. already at 29" you are overdrawing that bow. It  would be wise to sell it and buy a bow of at least 60" in length. Finger pinch is also a problem with the shorter bow. By looking at your pictures, it's a very nice bow. Someone with a shorter draw might find it to be exellent.
