I am moving up to Valpo IN, seeing if there are any traditional guys near there I could shoot with?

I grew up in Portage Indiana, about 10 miles west of Valparaiso. Lived there till I was 26 years old, then moved to East Tennessee about 20 years ago. I used to belong to an archery club located between Portage and Valpo, Deep River Bowman.  It's still there, and some of the guys shoot trad gear too. I recently pm'ed back and forth with a fella on another trad forum that lives in Portage that belongs to the club now. It's on HWY 149, south of HWY 6 going towards Valpo.

I just moved from Kouts, IN which is about 10 miles south of Valpo to Escanaba, MI. Wish I could help you out. What brings you to Valpo? I grew up in Portage also, I couldn't wait to get out of there, it's not a very good place anymore.

John, you must have landed a good job in Valpo. I would consider from the south side of Chicago to Michiagin city the armpit of America.

well I havent landed a good job yet im in the process of getting one but the whole reason for the move is my fiance got a job with Valpo university. So far I like valpo and i had researched the deep river bow men and will probably join them, I have only seen one archery shop so far, but havent had a chance to check it out yet, thanks for all the replys.

Valpo is still nice. I live next door in Hobart and belong to deep river bowmen. There are quite a few guys that shoot recurves and longbows.....there are some really bad parts of nw Indiana but valpo isn't one of them.

Valparaiso University is an excellent school with an outstanding reputation for its acedemics.
Pretty good mens basketball program as of late too if you like to watch college sports.

Blyths was the best place in Valpo to buy guns and bows when I lived in Indiana. They had an indoor archery range and two indoor gun ranges.

John, just stay out of Gary    :scared:    and you'll be OK.

I live in La Porte and can shoot out to 75-80 yds on my 5 acres.  Blythes in Valpo no longer handles any archery equipment and there are zero local places to buy trad gear.  As someone above said (minus Valpo, Chesterton, parts of LaPorte Co. and the dunes nat'l lakeshore) this is the armpit of america.  I grew up here and moved back a few years ago...and I'm moving to CO next summer.

Deep River is a decent place to shoot and they have some 3D shoots throughout the summer.  You'll be a close drive to Comptons next summer.

In all seriousness though you should like Valpo.  It's a nice community, good restaurants (try Valley kitchen downtown), and well maintained.  Economy in Valpo is the best in the state...tallest midget tho I suppose.

Kustom king is in schererville...about 25 minutes from valpo. I stop in from time to time. Blythes in Griffith has recurves and longbows from time to time. The owner of Blythes son shoots a caribow longbow.  Cloverdale, comptons, kalamazoo, and the longbow shoot in Hastings are all reasonable drives from valpo. Cabelas and bass pro are right here in the area. all kinds of 3d clubs in the tri state area. We hit a different one every weekend. Nwi is far gone in a lot of ways but there are big deer and good shoots...and money to be made....why else would people want to live here!

The "scenery" in downtown valpo is 2nd to none when the weather gets warm! Unbelievable!

Kind of stumbled across this but I live in Griffith which is about 30 min. West of valpo. I just found out about deep river bowmen and was going to look into them. Me and a few friends shoot at little place over the border in Illinois. I would enjoy getting together with trad guys in this area to shoot. Wasn't aware there were any.
