Jock Whisky

I had a moment's carelessness last January. I fell from 12 feet off a ladder onto the concrete floor in my garage. At 62 I don't bounce anymore.
I get to see the ortho-surgeon in early July to talk about surgery. Anyone have any experience here???

Long story short I ended up with a sprained wrist and a 1 inch x 3/8 inch tear in my rotator cuff (supraspinatus.) No broken bones thank you.  After 5 months of physio I can barely pull my 45 lb recurve.

Bottom line for you lads and lassies is be careful take the time to do it safely. I'll have been out of commission for a year or more. The 2 minutes to have done it properly seems really insignificant now.

Only takes a milli-second for something to change your life. I had a rotator cuff repaired and a bicep tendon reattached. My rehab time was a few months. It all depends on the Dr. and the severity of what is found when opened up.
Good luck and listen to the Dr.

Not being able to shoot a bow is drastic but I'm glad you werenot hurt any worse. i hope they get you all right again.

Good luck and follow the Dr's orders!

My bud Russ Claggett just had the same surgery. He's still in a sling but progressing on schedule.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune! Ounce of prevention... Best of luck.

A six foot fiberglass ladder shot out from under me. I landed on it on my left side breaking three ribs and my left wrist trying to stop the sudden impact. eight weeks of doing nothin' The accident occurred in the middle of July and I couldn't comfortably shoot until end of October. It was probably 18 months before I had no notice in my wrist of discomfort although  during that time I knew what bows were shocky or not. I was 52 at that time and am 55 now and three weeks into recovery from laproscopic hernia repair. Man it sucks getting old!

JW, Hope you heal up well. To get back after surgery, ( my left shoulder, rotator, bone spurs and bi-ceps repair ) it took me a total of about 1 year at 60.

I've had both shoulders repaired, Right shoulder rotator cuff  and a tenden in my left shoulder.
I'd start back with a lighter bow (35lbs or less).
Better safe then having to repair it again!

Jock,

I feel your pain brother. Buddy Bell and I have been talking about how it sucks getting older...and all those years we thought we were bulletproof.......at least I did anyway.

Well, we ain't.

I pulled the spura spanatry (or whatever it is) all the way off......plus some other stuff that's built up over the years......

Two problems with surgery........one....you'll feel stupid and useless afterward with that sling on...when you think you can still do stuff.  Key word is...you think you can still do stuff........

After 10 days or so you'll be sure you can go back to whatever you were doing.......but dont.

I spoke to the DR today........told him I had drawn an elk tag in Arizona after 8 years.......and if I had to pull the bowstring with my teeth.........I'm going on that hunt.

The good news is I should be good to go by then, and I just had this surgery 10 days ago......believe me, it sucks sitting around but it is time paid back....

And, when it's over, you'll be good as new......

Good luck!

Russ

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.  I don't bounce so well, either.  Took a 15 foot tumble last year an broke 7 ribs.  Buddy, what are you talking about?  You are still a young man, bro.
