Bud B.

I've been working on an arrow for the auction. I still have work to do but I have a couple hours in this already. Sizing the wood was the biggest part of that. Hand planing and sanding takes a bit. Not planing too much is tedious. In one of the photos you can see some of the bark chips from the raw shaft. (2nd photo)

I didn't want to try my hand at a self nock, no drill press, so I have used an old white speed nock.

Feathers are modified shields from stringstretcher, who really is the inspiration for this arrow. I cut the wood last year.

I'll get it posted by the auction deadline, but here is a peek. It was a booger to get straight.

I have a special point I'm going to add to it. Sorry primitive guys, not a knapped head.

Hopefully it'll spark interest in someone to bid high for the children of St. Jude's.

Thanks guys and gals.

That is one great looking arrow and fantastic work there Bud.  Nice cut on the feathers too.

Thanks all.

Charlie,

That wood look familiar?

And I just nipped some of the tail off of your shield cut feathers. The real cut came from your hands  :)

Awesome arrow there Bud.  You could also us a router with an 1/8" straight cut bit mounted in a table to cut your self nocks.  Just make sure to use a fence.

What kind of finish is on the wood?  I like the color.

After getting the shaft close to 11/32, I used a red oak block of wood with a 23/64 and a 11/32 hole drilled in it and used a drill to spin the shaft though the holes. That was testy. Doing that burnished the finish on the wood. I then used Provincial Minwax stain, which took lightly due to the burnishing.

Dipped 2x in wipe on Minwax polyurethane gloss.

I got it finished.

733 grains of Sourwood with a three blade BH (VPA, I think...someone help me on that.)

The BH came from the Chris Surtees Mojo Arrow I bought last year on the St. Jude's Auction.

I wish I had a spine tester.

Make a hillbilly spine tester.  Put 2 nails a set distance apart (can be anything as long as the arrow touches both).  Now take an arrow that you know the spine of and hang a weight from it.  Make a pencil line at the lowest part of the deflection then grab your new arrow and do the same thing.  If it lines up, it's the same.  If it is above the pencil mark it is stiffer and just the opposite if it is below the pencil mark.  Crude, but will atleast give you an idea.

I like the burnishing idea.  Just a thought in my head, but what about staining then burnishing?  Maybe a darker color?  Probably would temper it as well from the heat (just a thought in my head).  I might have to give that a try.

I thought the staining prior might cause the wood to hang up from friction. It wanted to hang up anyway. I had to be r-e-a-l- careful doing it.

Arrow is posted in the auction now.

Man Bud that's a nice looking arrow.
Looks like a VPA broadhead to me
Maybe if I win it you will personally deliver?

Bud B.

I certainly will Sir...and buy your lunch whenever we can meet up. Hope you are well. Good to hear from you Benny.

And forgot to mention, 30.75" BOP

Bumpin' for the kids. Gotta get as many eyes on it as the auction nears  :)

Lots of good things listed in the auctions this year. I especially like the Cajun stuff from New Iberia.... luv me some Cajun cooking.
