Hi it has been some time since i have posted something. Me and a cupl buddys are planning on going to co. for some elk hunting next year and i was wondering if my arrows are heavy enough and if not maybe you could point me in the rght direction. I have a 60# @28 and i draw 31". i have 32" mayhem carbon's with 125gr tips. Any advise?

hunt slow when its time to hunt slow, go fast when you need to go fast and then shoot straight.
77# @ 29.5 r/d longbow homer
80# @ 29.5 GN super Ghost

31" Wow thats long!!  Do you know what your finished arrow weight is?  If you're right on your draw length that means you're drawing around 67-71lbs. Somewhere in the 600 grain area is what a lot of guys consider the standard for elk and such.  I have a much shorter draw 60# at 25" and I built my arrows for moose around 600-620grains.   Joe

More important though is a well tuned arrow and some silly sharp BH's.  Joe

Study JoeM's second post because that is the bottom line for most all big game hunting. After that just about any arrow that is properly spined for your bow will be heavy enough to do the job.

Having said that, it is wise to maximize arrow performance by weighting the arrow to 9-10 grains per pound of bow weight... minimum.

Carbon arrows are notoriously over spined and under weight for trad bows. This can be remedied easily enough by adding tip weight by various means... steel or brass adapters and inserts primarily.

It's not uncommon to end up with 300 grains on the front of the arrow to properly tune the shaft and boost total arrow weight... and that's a good thing!

Do a search for arrow tuning and you'll learn a lot.

Thanks joe and charlie. I was wrong about the bow it is 60# @28.i also had another question that has to do with the arrow flight.on my rest i use soft sided velcro. I recently replaced it and it is wearing heavy about 3/8 to 1/2 from the wall. Can you guys Tell me what this means? i will post the arrow weight as sonn as i can.

JoeM

Hey Robert,
That heavy wearing could be a knock adjustment or a spine problem.  I had a issue similar to what you're describing one time and it was a knocking height issue for me. What part of NY are you from? Joe

Ok i just checked my arrow weight and its at 489gr. i will make up some brass washers to see if i can get it up to 650ish. Thanks for the help. I will let you know how it works out.

FoMoCo429

im still tring to figure out the whole sizing so heres another pic

If those 489gr arrows are spined correctly you cannot simply add 100-150gr to it. If you do it will no longer be in tune. You will need to shorten the length of the shaft or go to a heavier spined shaft.

And your bow weight (DW) is more than enough to kill any elk out there.
