Ok so I'm just really getting into traditional and I need some help with choosing a good arrow to start with... My draw length is about 29" and the bow is 53# @ 28" so I'm guessing my actual peak weight will be about 56#...

I was leaning towereds first trying some 2315 with about a 150 grains up front, this might be a little on the stiff side yet so I was gonna leave them a little long too...

I wouldn't mind trying out some carbon shafts but I have heard they can be a little tougher to tune with and get correct spine. That is the reason I was first gonna try out aluminum and sorta get dialed in...

Any input on what would be a good starting point and how to fine tune the setup would be very appreciated...

Thanks in advance,
Josh

Don't you think 2117 would be a little weak? I'll have to leave my arrows around 30" long with my draw length

Bladepeek

2117's out of my 50# @ 28" recurve, cut to 30.5" with 175gr up front shoot well for me and I draw 29.5". If I go to 2219's I have to load them up with 200gr points.

145gr out of your 55/56 #'er shouldn't be too far off. I agree, leave it full length and cut back to 30" only if necessary.

Gold Tip 3555 carbon arrows are hard to beat for durability. In my experience, carbons are easiest of all to tune.

31" 2117 with 125 grain point will be a really good match for your setup.

Ok I'll give 2117's a try then...

And if I want to try carbon out as well I should stick with a 400 spine or 3555 in GT case? What length and point weight should I start with?

Finally what do I look for to determine if I need to weaken or stiffen the spine? How do you guys like to tune your setups?

Is the bow's shelf cut to center? and are you concerned with total arrow weight or F.O.C?  You can get several different carbon arrows to work with your setup by playing with the point/insert weight and length of the shaft but you may notice a different trajectory especially over 18-20 yards which may or may not bother you.
You could tune GT 5575's to work and most likely even 3555's. CE Heritage 150's would be worth a look as well.  Keep in mind that the GT 3555's are only 30 1/2 inches long and the others mentioned are at least 32" if I remember correctly.

I'm not sure on if shelf is cut to center... Is there a way to see if it is?

If it's a recurve, it's most likely center shot...

Yes its a Sley recurve and by looking down the string and arrow I would say its cut slightly past center...

I bought some 2216s because its all the shop had for arrows close to the spine I need... There only a little stiffer than 2117s so I should be close...

Now how do I determine if there stiff or weak and what sort of things do you do to tune? Paper, bare shaft, other and how do you go about it with a recurve?

sunshine

2117 would be good but if going for weight don't forget the 2020.

Use the search function at the top of the page and type in Stu Miller Spine Calculator. Now look in the shooters forum and when you find it you can download this valuable piece of info. Hope this will get you going in the right direction.
Do the same for bare shaft tuning.

Good luck,
Grouse

Thanks for the replies guys... I'll look up that calculator and also some info on bare shaft tuning and dig in...

I made up 2 arrows yesterday leaving them full length and seeing them fly I'd say I definately got some tuning to do but it was good fun regardless...

I think I'm gonna have a blast on this journey!
