Hill Bow Gips and How It's Different than Other Hill Style Bows....

Hey all,

Something I have noticed on these Hill bows since following that massive thread about them and that is that the grip on the actual HILL bows is not the same as those on some of the other Hill style bows.

I have always liked and wanted a Hill bow, but what really got me wanting one of that type is seeing that Dave Johnson Hill Style longbow.  When I looked at pics of both of them it looked to me that the grip on the Johnson bow was different.  It looked bigger, more oval shaped, like it filled the hand more.  I also looked at the Hill Style made by Apex Predator, the Cumberland, and his grip is also bigger and shaped different than the Hill bows.  I much prefer the look of the grips on the Hill and Apex Predator.  There are other that have similar grips as those 2 as well.

Am I just seeing something that isn't there?  Can you all see a difference too?  If I wanted a grip like the ones on the Johnson bow, would Ekin make it like that?

I hope you all are getting what I am talking about.  If not, I'll try and find a couple of pics that illustrate what I am talking about.

Can you all see the difference too?

Thanks

Not everyone is building a grip that Howard liked pesonally. He preferred a narrow, deep grip that was wedge shaped. It was designed to reduce torquing the bow.

John Lee built the last few bows Howard used.  You see a bow Howard built for himself. Dave Miller has a link to the site, on his Contact Page. Both are sites are below.

Also, look at the bow Ron LaClair is building, it is called Shrew Hill. It is built like the bow John Lee built for Howard.    http://www.shrewbows.com

Nice bows.  I like the handle style on those bows too.

If you go to the recent threads by Bud B and MUDD showing their Dave Johnson Hill Styles I believe you can get an idea of what kind of grip I am talking about.

Lots of pics in those threads.  Hopefully you can see what I am getting at.

How is that handle on the DJ bow different from the ones on the actual Ekin Hill Bows?

Thanks

I have a Dave Johnson lonbbow and the biggest difference is the belly end of the bow is more rounded than a Hill. As Hud said my Hill has a grip that is more tear drop or wedge, which is wider in the front and tapers to the belly. The Johnson is more of a constant same size shape with a more rounding on belly side. Of the two I prefer the Johnson. Dave is an excellent guy to deal with and will work with you to make you what you want.

Larry,

Most bowyers will build the grip the way you want, if you can give them accurate information like measurements and photos.

Nala,
Dave Johnson will make the grip how you want it.
I had him make mine narrow and wedge shaped, and like it very much.
I believe Craig at HHA will do the same.

One of Howard's personal bows as per David Miller. I like to call it a boat-tail.

Thanks all for the info.

I have no doubt that they would make me a bow with the grip I wanted.  My problem is that I don't really KNOW how to describe what I am seeing and wanting.

I saw a couple pics of a Cumberland longbow by Apex Predator and that bow had a grip that looked perfect to my eye, but I swear I don't think I could describe it for someone to duplicate for the life of me.

I would love to have a Dave Johnson longbow.  I would probably tell him to make the grip just the way he made it on the RED DRAGON bow that was on here a while back and owned by MUDD.

Something about that grip appeals to my eye.

Thanks again.
