Well' some buddies and I put in for an archery hunt in Utah, if we draw we will be after Mulies. We will be hunting in unit 28, I have never been hunting in Utah, don't know anything about this area, i am looking for some info about this unit, Anybody hunt in the area mentioned? any info would be appreciated. I sure hope we draw. I talked to a person at the DWR and was told I could buy an Elk permit also OTC.
Thanks in advance

Jim Wright

Possibly the fastest way to get detailed information about the area would be to get back in touch with "DWR" and ask how to get in touch with the wildlife biologist over the area. They are regularly "on the ground" in their areas and it has been my experience that these guys are a treasure chest of information concerning their areas and are quite willing to help hunters who ask for it.

Area 28 would be the Panguitch unit. There's deer all over that unit but in August they will be high down to about 7500 ft or so. Probably your best bet is on the east side within 8 miles of Panguitch lake, same goes for elk.

Elk tags are 388 for the hunters choice tag which means you can shoot a spike or cow. I'll be buying one of these tags myself if I don't draw the Limited Entry tag. You can hunt statewide with that tag and south of highway 14 is an any bull unit, area 29-Zion, lots of private property though so you have to know where you are at at all times.

I have not hunted unit 28 but most anyplace in Utah is going to be a treat. The people will go out of their way to help you out any way they can. I love hunting Utah!   :archer2:    :archer2:

I cannot believe the responses I have gotten on this topic! I am soooo Underwhelmed!!! thank you to those who did.

Here's the deal with UT, the herds are way down, there are some deer still, but from what I've seen few and far between. Also it is not a given you will even draw this year. No one knows what the new system is going to be like or where people will hunt. I did not even put in for a tag this year because it has been so bad. Gonna hunt deer in other states that actually have them.

If you are underwhelmed with the help here, know that there are few trad bowhunters in this state.
I've never hunted panguitch lakes are but, it looks nice. Sorry if you feel like you haven't gotten the help you think you should have. Most guys are willing to help, but I know of no other Trad Gang member that hunts in that unit. So mabey check some other forums or resources, but please don't think that most if not all of us would help.
Good Luck!

You really haven't hunted the old fashion way until you've done it from one of these Indian houses.(The Tipi) "Glenn ST. Charles"

Over&Under

You started this thread on March 1st...it's been less than 2 days, plus it's the weekend....you get underwhelmed pretty quick.

Like Steadman said, not a lot of trad guys over there, and probably less that hunt that unit...give it some time you may get more responses....or you may not.

I have never hunted this area so not much help there. As already stated the deer herds here are in bad shape. I also will be going out of state (if gas prices don't go to High) this year. More they likely will hunt elk. Lots of luck on your draw.
