If you are planning to hunt elk in Wyoming you need to be planning ahead.  The Wyoming elk drawing application period closes end of January, need to apply now for tag, all tags issued by drawing.

I have hunted with a couple fellows that have hunted with Mule Creek and they can't say enough about the operation. We hunted together in Wyoming a few years ago and have stayed in touch. .My hunting plans were put on hold but they went and had a great time and both tagged nice bulls.
Sherpa, I am PM'ing you.

Sounds like a heck of great way to have a high class elk hunt of your dreams!  There is nothing like packing in to the high country in Sept!
If you haven't seen them before you should read some of Sherpas old threads about his own elk hunts.  He knows how to do it right!
John, do you remember the titles of some of those old threads?  I'd love to read them again - always good to have inspiration this time of year!

Whip,

I could only find one of my old hunts in the archives.  I know there are at least 3 other elk hunts I have done stories on but they are from too long ago and have been deleted.  Here is a link to the one story I did find.

Hey Al,

Hoping to see you over here again someday. Eric and I will be heading back up to happy valley again this August.  Will be thinking of you while I search for that 400 class bull again.  I hope he is still up there.

Regards

Hi again John, mate... that bull is in one hell of a spot ( if he still lives that is) and he know that steep hell hole like the back of his... Well, hand.

I wish you guys well.

Sherpa, what do non-resident elk tags cost?

Nonresident tags are $577.00 in the regular drawing plus a $14.00 application fee = $591.00

Preference points are $50.00 per point and you will need at least one point to draw.  You can accumulate one point per year per species.  Preference points go on sale July 1- Sept.30, good for the draw the next year.

The nonresident special elk tag runs $1057.00 plus the $14.00 application fee = $1,071.00

You can most likely draw the special tag without any preference points, costs you $430.00 more than the regular tag with a preference point but you don't have to wait a year to draw.

LKH

In the high pref points units it's a tossup whether you do better w/special tag.  One year I opted for the special and was one of 3 guys who didn't draw w/max points in 108.   All the regular guys drew.

Whip

If you're even thinking remotely about hunting elk you need to pull up some of those links Sherpa posted above.  What adventures!!
