Great story. What a beautiful place. I did not see the amount of deer that you did, but I saw deer almost every hunt. Nothing ever presented an ethical shot. This was my first Black Beard Island hunt, so I will use the knowledge from this year's hunt to my advantage next year. I was with a party of four. Three of us were trad hunters and the fourth may have gotten the first xbow kill on the island. Yes, xbows are allowed on Black Beard now.
Anyway, I hunted with my trusty recurve on the north end which meant I had a three+ mile hike into my stand each trip. Most days I put over twelve miles hiking that beautiful island.
The chop crossing the channel to the mainland presented quite the challenge to our boat as well. My buddy riding with me is not used to boating and he wanted to kiss the dock when we got back!  :D

The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

When I was there, if you killed a deer, you brought it out to the trail/road and waited for the guy on a tractor pulling a wagon.  They would pick up the deer and the successful archer could ride the wagon back if they wanted.  Most didn't though.

We had to be on stand at daylight and couldn't move about until 9:00 AM or so, then back on stand at 3:00 PM or till dark.  If they caught you and you had no emergency, they'd send you back to the mainland.

You guys from Athens making me home sick.  I finished at UGA in 1972 after I left the Army.

You wanna' go Steve?  I might be interested in going back.
