?ever send a piece of wood to your bowyer?

Am considering ordering a bow. The bowyer is limited in the wood selections i've seen on their bows. Anyone ever get wood for the riser and also purchase lams and send to a bowyer to be built?

Ive had lams "drop shipped" to the bowyer.  I have been tempted to send in the riser wood, but never have.  Just be sure and talk it over good with the bowyer,  check the wood out for anything he may want/not want, check the moisture content etc...

You bet. That's a great way to do it. Just make sure and check with the bowyer. There are woods they don't want to and/or won't work with.

Absolutely. I checked with the bowyer first, then sent him a piece if lumber for the lams of a bow.

I have a Great Northern Ghost that I had them use a piece of Zircote in the riser and limb tips that I brought back from a trip to Belize.  I just wanted a personal touch in my bow and it turned out sweet.  I am sure any bowyer will do it if the piece of wood is worthy of their craft.  Mine was just a big chunk of wood so Rick and Jerry saved the small drops from it and I have since used it for knife handles and such.  

Not sure I could get something like that through customs anymore?  The customs people were a little perplexed when they saw that log in my backpack :-)

Do it all the time, have had several done that way.  Most any Bowyer will work with you on your particular needs. I don't worry about moisture content or anything but size. I have is shipped to the Bowyer they will cut it up and check for moisture and build the bow when the wood is ready. Here is a Widow I had made from Black & White Ebony.  Sweet.   RW

Ditto what everone else has said, i've done it using some of our great sponsor here for Lams and skins on 2 Centaurs built by Jim Neaves.

I've built several bows with customer wood. Some that the customer cut was some of the nicest wood I have ever seen. Walnut in particular. However most of us have a large supply in stock and a large supply available to buy.
As to waiting for wood to dry Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Air drying can take years. I just cut into some myrtle that was cut 4 years ago into slabs and it was still wet. You can dry lams out really quick but risers can take several years.

Andy - I'm sure Dale is trying to figure out what else he can make from it!  I got two sets of limbs with the bow and he used the walnut to lam one set.

Steve- the wood is actually California Claro.  It had a LOT of years of air drying.
