Just got back in from opening morning here in IL. What a great morning for the opener crisp and cool, slightly overcast, gentle breezes, raining acorns, squirrels every where.

I can't put it in words but it's just a wonderfull feeling to back in the stand bow in hand watching the critters.

I only saw one deer a little 7 pointer sporting his first rack but he entertained me for about 40 minutes watching him rub saplings and eat white oak acorns. He was tempting and was within 10 yards several times but I just couldn't get myself to do it this early in the year!

I'm glad seasons back there is no place better to relax then in the deer woods.

Sounds like a great morning to me.  I agree, its hard to describe sometimes why I just love being out there.

I know what you mean Dennis.  I watched a doe and a fawn feed past me at 7 yds for about 1/2 hour this morning.

Then the ole gal got downwind of me and stood there and blew for another 1/2 hour.

Shoulda shot her when she was under me......

Ahhhhhh!
Opening day in the midwest -- there is nothing like it. Opening day is hot weather since I moved to The South, and I do miss the midwest and the cool air of a good opening morning.
Thanks for the description -- made me a little homesick.

Same feeling here in in the Northeast - NY, just outside of the Adirondacks.  Mama and little skipper within 30 yards by 7:30 and then a nice 8 pointer at 25 yards by 8:00 am, too far for this fella to shoot.  Good to be out though.

Yep - great morning - best opening day morning for me.  12 deer between 6:30 and 8:30, two little bucks, four within shooting range, and not a shot taken.    :)

pa opener was today and it was nasty and raining.    :(

Seeking Trad Deer

Passed up 2 yearlings 10 yards away but it was a joy to see deer.  Great day to be alive!

I talked to my best friend around 10:30AM today. He was in the highest spirits I've heard him in for months. That's what opening day (Indiana) on the edge of a cornfield in "Killer Stand" and seeing 14 deer will do for you!

Unfortunately I was on I-75 facing a 900 mile drive at the time, but I was sure happy for Jim!
