i really like shooting my PMA and I have to say I shoot it better than any other bow I have.  My thought is that the weight of the riser and the general design of the limb attachment make this bow a sweet shooter.  however I would really like a bigger grip and some more exotic woods.  Any Bowyer out there that uses a similar design?

Mike, I hate to ask the obvious but the Widow guys will make you any kind of grip ya want and they will pretty well get ya any wood ya want short of some ebony due to its oil content.....

With your question, you are asking for an X bow any way so whats the deal?????

i thought the only woods available were the listed on their website.  I will have to check on that - i really wanted a dalmation ebony, but there are plenty of others.

The grip choices did not include sizes - didnt think i could ask for "thicker", just low - high , etc

I did talk to HABU and the wait is just too long - i have been watching for a used one, but no luck at a lighter weight bow.

any other thoughts?

thanks

i do really like it, just would like a different wood and a fatter handle.  This was a successful test - first widow I have ever shot and proved to be a shooter for me.

Mike:

The boys at Nixa will make the bow out of anything you want.... however, they will also tell you what to stay away from.... There are some woods that do not "perform" well when glued up and made into a bow.  There is a gentelman close to Nixa that they work with who has a huge selection to say the least.

The grip thing can be as simple as making a hand cast or supplying a bow with a grip that you like....

The ordering of a full out custom bow is an experience.  You should call over there and talk with them.  First make a list of wood types you want to use... both riser and limbs and the #'s draw at your draw.  Talk it over.  Then talk about the grip.

I really think you will find they can provide you with exactly what you are looking for.

Good luck

Thought I would add, I have an older MA III 45# @ 28", 62".  I love it. You are correct, the mass in the riser is what makes that bow shoot well for me. Picked it up on here in the "buy, sell and trade" section.  I had a question about the finish so I took it to Cloverdale for Ken to look at a number of years ago.  It was one of the "frost" finish bows.

Killed one of my deer with it this past year... They will last forever I think, if you take care of them.....

Just talked to the Widow guys and they did say they could copy any grip, just send them the bow you want copied or tell them how you want it.  You can also send them riser wood or lams to use on your bow if you find something you like.
I'm getting more dangerous all the time...

Sounds like I have some options - thanks. I will call widow tomorrow.

How does widow get their risers to be so heavy? If I pick up a 560 fedora 1 piece it is a light as a feather. The TD hardware can't be that heavy.

All that phenolic in the riser weighs a bunch.  Adds to that BW feel and durability we all love.

There are some beauts here in the forum if you look.  Some with only black and white phenolic, etc...
Give me a bow a topo and two weeks, and I guarantee I kill two weeks!

I saw a tiger myrtle that is awesome - just way too heavy for me. I'll keep looking.

Lots of good advice here.  Like many here, I have several brands of bows. Among them are three widows. Frankly, there are none that I have or have handled that are the same feel and heft as a widow.

I imagine the Habu might be the closest but I have no experience with Habu. The fellows that have them say even though they have the same limb fit design, Habu and Widows are far more different than you'd think.

The fellows at Nixa can put some beautiful woods on the limbs. I have cocobolo and a myrtle "X" models.  They can put great woods in the risers also but with all the lams and phenolic the risers don't display the exotic grains as well as some others, but I think the limbs more than make up for this.

If you want mass weight and a very unique bow, give Bill Dunn of Zipper bows a call.Get Bill to build a Elk antler riser bow.
