If you were planning to spend two weeks of Archery Deer Season camping and hunting what public land in North Carolina would you pick?

croatan. it has camping facilities and great deer population.  we found a 12 point shed there last year. I wouldn't camp or really even hunt it after gun season opens, because it gets covered up by hound hunters.

You may want to consider Uwharrie near Birkhead. It's not far away from area businesses and remote enough to be in total wilderness.

Off Hwy 49 south of Asheboro on Lassiter Mill Rd.

There's also Uwharrie near Troy off 24/27. They allow primitive camping at the end of Woodrun Rd (at Woodrun Camp) and bow season during the week will allow lots of room to stillhunt.

Wear snakeboots. Rattlers are abundant in this area.

I second the vote for Butner. Lots of good hunting there.            Gerald

Sandhills has a bunch of small deer.  A good pointing dog will quickly learn to point them in their beds if they aren't allowed to chase.

I know this isn't popular but smaller deer just plain taste better.  A good pointer can get you a shot at a bedded deer or one just waking up.  They taste even better than deer that have been running for their lives.

Thanks, keep them coming.

I hadn't considered Sandhills or Butner.  What portions of these gamelands do you suggest?
