In my search for a new classic longbow, I discovered there is a guy who makes them just a few miles from my house! His shop is called Red Mountain Archery, don't know if any of you have heard of it or not. Anyway, he has invited me over to see the bow making process and hopefully help me select a proper bow.

I will update later with the details of my trip. I am pretty excited about it.

Brock,
would appreciate your sharing of first hand impressions after you visit the shop.

They also have some very affordable cedar shafts which I was thinking of buying....  Would like to hear from you after your visiting their shop.

Well I visited the shop this week. The owner/bowyer is Steve Bingham, he used to go under the name of desert fox bows, I think thats what it was called, and changed to Red Mountain Archery when he moved to Utah. He said he knew and has hunted with a few people from this site.

His bows are very traditional, simple hickory or osage orange and bamboo. He has been making them for about 12 years.

His wood arrows are made from shafts he gets from Rose City Archery. They are highly customizable with many various crests, finishes, and fletching options.

It was a great experience to see the bows in various levels of completion and see how the process happens from a stick to a functional bow. As well as get some face time with a traditional shooter as they are so rare in Utah. I felt like a kid on field trip day.  ;)

Brock,

I am curious - did you end up buying from RMA?  I am also interested in getting one of their longbows, but I'd like to hear from someone who's shot one of them. Thanks!

I didn't end up buying one. I wanted something more modern with fiberglass lams and a centercut shelf. His bows are simple and very traditional osage with bamboo backing. So, I guess it just depends on what you are looking for, but I had no problems with his stuff.

Anyone who sees this post. Buyer beware if you purchase from Red Mountain Archery. I ordered and paid for a bow on Dec. 15, 2013 and never received my bow. They will not return emails or calls. There are many others with the same complaint. They are a bad, bad business. I have now filed a complaint with Utah's BBB. We will see what happens.

Thanks for posting. I emailed them about ordering some wood and got no response.

Might want to check the post about this business over on the other site before ordering on line.
